This route was planned by komoot.
This route is classified as difficult due to significant elevation gains, totaling over 900 meters across its 68-kilometer length. It requires a very good level of fitness. However, the use of e-bikes is popular and can make the climbs more manageable for a wider range of cyclists.
The terrain is characterized by a hilly landscape, winding through picturesque vineyards, forests, and charming villages. While many sections are on quiet roads, some parts can be unpaved, featuring gravel or even pebbles. Expect numerous ascents and descents as you traverse the 'Styrian Tuscany'.
The tour offers breathtaking panoramic views of rolling hills covered in vineyards, extending towards Slovenia, the Koralpe, and Sausal regions. Key highlights include the Domaine Peter Skoff Winery & Wine Tavern, Hartlieb's Oil Mill, Lake Sulm, the Confluence of the Lassnitz and the Sulm, and the stunning View of the Vineyards at Muzels. You'll also pass by landmarks like Grottenhof and Seggauberg.
Yes, the 'Genussradeln Weinstraßentour – Steiermark' is designed as a tour, implying a circular route that brings you back to your starting point, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of the South Styrian Wine Route.
The South Styrian Wine Route is beautiful in all seasons, but the best time for cycling is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, the vineyards are lush, and the *Buschenschänken* (wine taverns) and wineries are fully operational, offering the best 'Genuss' experience.
While the route itself is generally accessible, specific rules for dogs can vary, especially when entering establishments like wineries or *Buschenschänken*. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash and check with individual venues if you plan to stop with your pet. Be mindful of other cyclists and local wildlife.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Genussradeln Weinstraßentour – Steiermark, as it traverses public roads and trails within the Naturpark Südsteiermark. However, visitors are expected to respect local regulations, protect the natural environment, and adhere to any signage regarding private property or protected areas.
While there isn't one single official starting point, many cyclists begin their tour in towns like Gamlitz or Ehrenhausen, which offer various parking options. Look for designated public parking areas in these villages, often near tourist information centers or local amenities. Some wineries or accommodations may also offer parking for their guests.
Yes, the route shares sections with several other trails. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the 'Weinstraßen Tour' (92%) and also intersects with parts of the 'Sausalerradweg' (23%), 'Sulmtalradweg' (21%), and 'Weinlandradweg' (14%), among others. This offers opportunities to combine or extend your cycling adventure.
The tour is a 'Mecca for all those who love cycling and wine'. You'll find numerous traditional *Buschenschänken* (wine taverns) and wineries where you can sample local wines like Gewürztraminer and Morillon, often directly from the producer. Don't miss the chance to try regional delicacies such as the *Brettljause* (a traditional cold platter) and products made with local pumpkin seed oil, which you can learn about at places like Hartlieb's Oil Mill.
Yes, given the challenging hilly terrain and the popularity of e-bikes for making the climbs more accessible, there are several rental stations for e-bikes available in the Südsteiermark region, particularly in towns frequently visited by tourists along the wine route. It's advisable to book in advance, especially during peak season.
Big surprise this morning: NO rain was reported today 🥳 This must be used. At "tropical 8°C" 🥶 we set out on the route in the cold, damp morning mist: The "Wine Road Tour". At first the route was "totally flat", it was easy going in river valleys along the Sulm and Mur ... until it actually became a "wine road tour" - through the vineyards of Styria 🍇👌🏻 I've cycled through many wine regions, but what was offered today was truly "just wow" 😮 The route (away from the traffic!) on easily passable paths was great, there were plenty of places to stop for refreshments (if you wanted to use everything, you would NOT make any progress!!! 🙈) , and above all, the most beautiful panoramas were offered... I was/am thrilled - and can't even imagine how this wonderful wine country will present itself in 3 - 4 weeks when the vineyards are golden or colorful 🍂🍁 😍 This round is a clear recommendation for everyone! 👍🏻 Styria inspires me! 👌🏻
Great tour in Styria. Was about fresh, but grandiose panoramic ride.
The first 2/3 along the rivers rather less spectacular... then from Gamlitz but gigantic... but for "normal people" due to the inclines more e-bike required 😊😅
