Hiking

Höllental – the name alone promises mystery and involuntarily makes you think of the devil, fire and heat. During the hike, you will find out where the valley got its name from and what role the devil played in its creation using several information boards. Here you will discover not only the history of the valley's formation, but also the exceptionally large biodiversity. In order to preserve this valuable habitat for the numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species, the Höllental was designated a nature reserve and is part of the Europe-wide biotope network system "Natura 2000". In addition, the valley has been permanently shaped by humans, who in earlier centuries influenced it through mining, the use of natural hydropower and the construction of the Franconian Höllental railway. You will discover how all this shapes the Selbitz valley into its unique character on this informative hike.

Important note: Due to the partially alpine nature of the paths, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential for this hike.

Fossil Pillow Lava Outcrop in Höllental (Frankenwald)

Highlight • Natural Monument

Volcanic activity during prehistoric times shaped this region. In the Neolithic period, the course of the Selbitz river sawed up to 170 meters deep into the volcanic rock and created a narrow gorge.

🚂 Former Lichtenberg Station

Highlight • Historical Site

The station was built between 1897 and 1901 in the course of the extension of the railway line Triptis-Blankenstein by the Höllental more than one kilometer northeast of the city in the community part Blechschmidtenhammer. As the route was built by the Prussian State Railways on the basis of a treaty between Bavaria, Prussia and the house of Reuss, the station building with goods shed was built in the style of Thuringian stations.
The station is located just a few hundred meters from the border with Thuringia. After the German division, the line was interrupted on 3 July 1945 between Blankenstein and Lichtenberg, Lichtenberg became the terminus from Marxgrün. On the Bavarian side, there was no more passenger traffic. Freight traffic from Marx green to Lichtenberg was carried out until May 23, 1971, then the line was shut down and the tracks dismantled in 1982.

Super cool tour with a lot of input from our ranger Ines. Formation and current status of the forest.. Partly no GPS connection on the way back.. Otherwise worth a day trip

Once again in Höllental, but always beautiful, tons of different paths and options.

We were skeptical at first, as it turned out to be a small oasis. Small lake attached, WiFi worked!!!
Relaxed nice operators. We could choose a place. Sanitary facilities are new. Small takeaway, but not always open.

A beautiful hike with many highlights. We recommend.
