Almost forgotten how good cycling can feel without wind, wetness, bitter cold and mud.

I bought the bike before my last trip in October. This was only my second ride with it... and I had so much fun! This is the bike I originally wanted, but it wasn't available at the time. I'm still grinning when I think about the ride :-)

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to complete the Cologne West, Königsdorfer Forest, and Glessener Höhe Loop?

The estimated duration for this gravel biking loop is approximately 3 hours and 13 minutes. However, this can vary based on your fitness level, the number of stops you make, and the specific conditions of the trail.

What is the terrain like on this gravel biking loop?

The route offers a diverse mix of surfaces, making it an engaging gravel biking experience. You'll encounter sections of asphalt (around 23.7 km), unpaved paths (approximately 20.2 km), compacted gravel (about 10.3 km), and even some singletrack (around 4.44 km). Be prepared for segments with paved roads, streets, and cobblestones. Some parts, especially near Glessener Höhe, can be sandy, requiring good bike handling skills.

Is the Cologne West, Königsdorfer Forest, and Glessener Höhe Loop suitable for beginners?

This route is generally rated as moderate in difficulty and requires good fitness due to its length and varied terrain. While some shorter, mostly paved sections in Königsdorfer Forest might be suitable for all skill levels, the full loop includes more challenging segments, technical sections, and sandy areas that may require advanced riding skills. Some portions might even necessitate pushing your bike.

What natural features and landmarks can I see along the route?

The loop offers a variety of scenic points. You'll pass through the Cologne City Forest, by Deckstein Pond and Otto-Maigler Lake, and enjoy picturesque woodland scenery in the Königsdorfer Forest. Notable highlights include the View of the Colonius Tower from the Grüngürtel, the Belvedere Observation Tower, and the expansive views from the Glessener Höhe, where you can see Cologne, and on clear days, even Bonn and the Siebengebirge mountain range. Don't miss the Himmelsleiter Trail to Plateau in Naturpark Rheinland.

What is the best time of year to gravel bike this route?

The trail can be enjoyed throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is also a good option, especially for enjoying the shaded forest paths. Be mindful that some sandy sections might be more challenging after dry spells, and winter conditions could introduce mud or ice, particularly on unpaved sections.

Does this route intersect with other official trails?

Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the RegioGrün Erlebnisroute Nordwest Adenauer Weiher - Schloß Pfaffendorf, A1 Glessener Höhe, Jakobs-Pilgerweg Köln - Aachen, and A2 Königsdorfer Forst, among others.

Is the Cologne West, Königsdorfer Forest, and Glessener Höhe Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on this route, especially in the forest areas. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, particularly in designated nature protection areas and when passing through populated sections or near wildlife. Always practice Leave No Trace principles and clean up after your pet.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle this route or in Naturpark Rheinland?

No, there are generally no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle this route or to access the public areas within Naturpark Rheinland. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature conservation and private property. Cycling is typically restricted to designated paths.

Where can I park to access the trail, and is public transport an option?

As this is a loop starting from Cologne West, you can find various parking options in the western districts of Cologne, depending on your preferred starting point. For public transport, you can reach areas near the loop's start in Cologne West via local train or bus services, often allowing bikes during off-peak hours. Check local transport provider websites for specific bike carriage rules and schedules.

Are there places to eat or stay near the trail?

Given its proximity to Cologne and passage through several towns and villages, you'll find various cafes, pubs, and restaurants along or near the route, especially in Königsdorf and Frechen. For accommodation, Cologne offers a wide range of hotels and guesthouses. It's advisable to plan stops in advance, especially if you're looking for specific amenities.

What kind of bike is best suited for this loop?

Given the varied terrain, which includes asphalt, unpaved paths, compacted gravel, and some singletrack, a gravel bike is ideally suited for this loop. Its versatility allows it to handle both paved and unpaved surfaces comfortably. A mountain bike would also work well, especially for the more technical or sandy sections.
