Hiking

The tour, named after a memorial cross, runs above the Moselle towns of Mehring, Pölich, Schleich, and Ensch. The starting point is either the hiking car park on the Huxlay Plateau or one of the aforementioned towns.

The varied landscape alternates between quiet sections and short climbs. Numerous, uniquely designed vantage points offer fantastic views of the river panorama. Cultural highlights such as the Roman aqueduct in Pölich and the Lemon Merchant's Cross await you along the way.

A connecting path runs between Schleich and the Lemon Merchant's Cross, allowing you to divide the tour into two independent loops.

View of Mehring and the Moselle Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

Mehring is a small but really nice place on the Moselle. Nice is also the view from up here. Here you can see the baroque "onion dome" of the place, which is unique to this area. Mehring is all about the wine. Above you can enjoy the view from the vineyard. If you fancy culinary delights, you must dare to descent. In Mehring there are plenty of restaurants and wineries offering tastings.

Very well-maintained pavilion with a fantastic view over the Moselle valley.

A bridge made of carved tree trunks, covered with fine metal netting for safety, leads over the Krautenbach stream. In bad weather, the bridge is quite slippery, which makes it all the more fun.

Zitronenkrämer Cross

Highlight • Monument

A beautifully situated, small rest area at a memorial cross with an interesting history. A few meters further on, there is a well and a shelter.

Wine Barrel Viewpoint

Highlight • Rest Area

The wine barrel on the Moselsteig is a fancy resting place: fitting to the endless vineyards in the Mosel valley, you are sitting here in a huge barrel. In the wine barrel stand two benches and a table and so you stay dry even with a rain shower.

I parked in the hiking car park at the Huxlay Hut.

There is currently a diversion due to a landslide between the Huxlay Hut and Pölich.

The route was varied and offered many beautiful views of the Moselle. I particularly liked the peace and quiet and the picturesque landscapes along the route.

A beautiful hike between forest and open fields, and on narrow paths lined with vineyards, and always with great views of the Mosel, Eifel and Hunsrück.
It was fun, thank you Patricia for the tip 😊🙋🏻‍♀️

Today we started with the best hiking weather. This time to one of the side trips on the Moselle. The fall colors aren't quite there yet. Of course it's still nice. There was a lot of walking through the forest. About some supply routes, but also small trails. A great day.
Finally, I found a small ostrich restaurant. 😃

After 20.3 km, I was back at the parking lot. The remaining kilometers are already part of the return journey. A video will follow on YouTube soon.

For my standards got up early and then managed 20km.
I filled up my drinking bottles at the Sauerbrunnen. By then, 2.2 l had already gone. Then almost 4 l needed to reach the destination.
The tour can also be shortened in several places. But I had the ambition to go halfway the original route and make it. There were …

So that was a nice tour, but the signage is not good at a few points and I had problems with recording it 🙄 the tour is 20.9 km long
