Villach's suburb of Warmbad promises a soothing, relaxing bathing experience with the KärntenTherme. Of course, this pleasure has to be earned first, so you first hike along historic paths to the ancient walls of the Federaun castle ruins and back down again.
Start your circular hike in the spa park, which can easily be reached within a few minutes from Warmbad train station and the neighboring car parks. A short loop takes you across the former shooting range until you reach the old Roman road with its massive, stone steps. You will also find several Celtic burial mounds nearby.
Near the top of the pass in the hamlet of Oberfederaun there are beautiful views down into the valley. Don't miss the turnoff to the castle ruins and look forward to the rustic trail that takes you to the former castle complex. Some walls of the mighty outer castles and the main castle are still clearly visible and dominate the landscape.
Via the so-called Doctor's Path, which hopefully doesn't live up to its name, you reach the game enclosures at the Napoleonwiese and finally back to the spa park. A few meters further on, you can review your experiences of the day in the warm pools of the thermal baths.
