Parking can be found near the trailhead, often along residential streets like Wonder View Drive or Lake Hollywood Drive. Due to the trail's popularity, especially on weekends, it's highly recommended to arrive early to secure a spot. Be mindful of posted parking restrictions.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times, as is standard practice in Griffith Park. Remember to bring plenty of water for your canine companion, especially given the minimal shade and strenuous sections.
The cooler months, from late fall through spring (October to May), are ideal for hiking this loop. During summer, temperatures can be very high, and shade is minimal. Starting early in the morning, regardless of the season, is always recommended to avoid heat and crowds.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access the hiking trails within Griffith Park, including the Wisdom Tree, Hollywood Sign, and Lake Hollywood Loop. It's free for public use.
The terrain is varied and challenging. Expect steep, rocky, and uneven singletrack paths, particularly on the initial ascent to the Wisdom Tree. There's a lot of loose dirt and rocks, so good grip on footwear is essential. While much of the trail is dirt, some later sections, especially closer to the Hollywood Sign, may include paved portions. It can also be a bit overgrown and narrow in parts.
This loop offers numerous iconic sights and panoramic views. You'll pass by the unique Wisdom Tree on Burbank Peak, get an up-close perspective from the Back of the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee, and enjoy views from Hugh Heffner Overlook - Aileen Getty Ridge. Other highlights include Mulholland Dam, Cahuenga Peak, and Lake Hollywood Park.
This trail is generally rated as moderate to difficult and is not recommended for beginners or those with limited hiking experience. The initial climb to the Wisdom Tree is particularly steep and strenuous, often described as a 'butt kicker' due to rapid elevation gain. Good fitness and appropriate footwear are essential.
Given the challenging terrain and minimal shade, it's crucial to bring plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), and snacks. A map or GPS device is also advisable, as some sections can be a bit confusing. There is a Water Refill Station along the route, but it's best to be self-sufficient.
Yes, the route utilizes several established trails and roads within Griffith Park. You'll traverse sections of Lake Hollywood Drive, Montlake Drive, Innsdale Trail, Aileen Getty Ridge Trail, Burbank Peak Trail, and Mulholland Highway, among others. This combination allows for the comprehensive loop experience.
You'll get fantastic views of the Hollywood Sign from multiple points. The trail takes you directly behind the sign on Mount Lee, offering a unique perspective. Additionally, the View of the Hollywood Sign from Tyrolean Tank and the Canyon Lake Drive Overlook provide excellent photo opportunities from different angles.
While there are no dedicated restrooms directly on the trail, you might find facilities at Lake Hollywood Park. For cafes or other amenities, you'll need to venture into the surrounding neighborhoods of Hollywood or Burbank, which are a short drive from the trailheads.
First day in LA - let's start with a hike to the landmark par excellence. The route was rated easy by Komoot - the girls complained a lot on the climb to Burbank Peak - but the view was definitely worth it. On the way back, however, we decided to take a different route through Lake Hollywood Park - so today's tour became a nice circular route. I liked it - especially at 18 degrees hiking is more fun than at five degrees and permanent rain. And the LA skyline was beautiful to look at
