Hiking

This challenging hike takes you from Engen to Singen, along five former volcanoes and through the history of impressive castle ruins. Your journey begins at the train station in Engen, where the first climb to Hohenhewen awaits you. The effort of the climb is rewarded with a wide view of Lake Constance and the ruins of an old castle that tells of times gone by. The path takes you further, past shady forests and nature reserves that stretch like green oases along the path.

At Hohenstoffeln you can choose whether you dare to climb to the summit and stand above things for a moment. A bench along the way invites you to pause and offers an ideal setting for impressive views. The tour then takes you through the wide valley to Mägdeberg, where the Hegau shows itself in all its glory. A short detour to the summit reveals the ruins of an old castle and its stories.

The Hohenkrähen, small but mighty, requires surefootedness and offers panoramic views. After a relaxing stop at the Hotel/Restaurant Hegauhaus, known for its excellent cuisine, you tackle the last stage. Your route takes you past the highest vineyards in Germany and straight to Singen. Here, at the Landesgartenschau train station, your journey through the Hegau ends, which has taken you past historical witnesses and through natural beauties.

Hohenhewen Castle

Highlight • Castle

A hike to the Hohenhewen castle ruins is worthwhile just for the wonderful view. A viewing platform was built onto the rest of the keep, from which you can see the Hegau mountains, Lake Constance and the Swabian Alb to the north. In good weather and with a clear view, you can also see the Alps and the Black Forest.

Hohenkrähen Castle Ruins

Highlight • Castle

On a more than 600 meters high and steeply sloping volcanic cone towers the ruin Hohenkrähen above Schlatt. The way up is actually quite narrow and meanders right up the cliff face up to the castle ruin. For the rocky ascent you will be rewarded with a fantastic view and an exciting castle ruin.

Hohentwiel Fortress Ruins

Highlight • Castle

Huge, very interesting fortress with a great view. Bring plenty of time and go into the cellar. Attention! The tickets have to be bought at the bottom of the mountain. There is a kiosk right by the fortress.

April 4, 2025,Tour über die Hegau Vulkane von Singen nach Engen
A truly beautiful tour over Hohentwiel, Hohenkrähen, Mägdeburg, and Hohenhewen 🏰☀️

It was very challenging and definitely pushed me to my limits 😅

But it's all the more rewarding to see what my body is capable of now, something that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

I was inspired to do the Hegau volcano tour by @Ute at the beginning of the year. I love the Hegau volcanoes and was immediately taken with the idea of hiking six of them in one day. The volcano trail doesn't always lead over the summit, but you can deviate from the trail now and then.
Each volcano offers several …

Now, in 2021, the premium path "Vulkan-Tour" from Engen to Singen has also been set up, now it's really time. But since the path usually runs past the peaks, I put together my own tour from Premium, Querweg FR-Bodensee and some wild paths.
I …

After the same old rounds of the house all winter, today we went for a proper hike. It was lovely.

The Hegauer Vulkantour was opened in 2021 and certified as a premium hiking trail. It starts in Singen and goes around the Hegauberge Hohentwiel, Hohenkrähen, Mägdeberg, Hohenstoffeln and Hohenhewen. With a tour length of around 30 kilometers and an altitude difference of around 900 metres, it is a challenge as a day tour. If you want to take all the …

Today the route went from Engen to Singen. As ordered by Peter, golden October was announced! 🤗 However, the path was still soapy and slippery at times, which required great concentration with strong ups and downs in the meantime. Still a really cool route, as it goes over the volcanoes Hohenhewen, Hohenstoffel and Hohentwiel and there are also detours to …
