The Lost Valley and McKenny Loop is a moderate mountain biking trail. On average, riders complete the full 25.6 km (16 miles) route in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on skill level and stops.
The loop primarily features singletrack winding through a beautiful forest with tall trees. You can expect a mix of raw natural terrain, including some technical sections with roots and rocks. While clear-cut areas are now ridable, be prepared for seasonal mud, especially in lower sections. The Lost Valley Trail portion is known for its sweeping sections with a few interesting pitches.
While individual sections like the Lost Valley Trail and McKenny Trail are rated 'Green' (easy/beginner), the overall loop is considered 'moderate' due to its length and elevation gain. Some sections are 'easy intermediate.' Beginners with good fitness can tackle it, but be aware of the sustained climbs and some technical spots.
The loop can be accessed from the Fall Creek Trailhead. Another key starting point is near the Middle Waddell Campground. Parking is available at these trailheads within Capitol State Forest.
Thanks to recent trail work, the Lost Valley and McKenny Loop is now ridable year-round. However, for the best experience, late spring through early fall offers drier conditions. While it's no longer a 'mud-fest,' seasonal mud can still be present, particularly in the wetter months.
Yes, dogs are allowed on the Lost Valley and McKenny Loop. Please ensure your dog is kept on a leash and that you clean up after them to preserve the trail for everyone.
Yes, a Discover Pass is required for vehicle access to trailheads and recreation lands managed by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which includes Capitol State Forest. You can purchase a Discover Pass online or at various retail locations.
Yes, the route utilizes sections of several trails. Besides the Lost Valley and McKenny Trails, it also passes through parts of D-4700, Waddell Basin West, D-4720, D-4717, Bills Hill Trail, D-4800, D-4700A, Al Davis Trail, Waddell Basin East Trail, D-4820, D-4000A, D-4075, Mima Falls West, D-4080, D-4915, Greenline, D-4910, Little Larch Mountain, D-4707, and D-4711.
While the loop can be ridden in both directions, riding counter-clockwise is often recommended. This direction provides a more gradual climb and rewards riders with an 'awesome descent' on the McKenny Trail. Riding clockwise involves a more intense 2.5-mile 'workout' climb up McKenny.
The Middle Waddell Campground is a highlight along the route and offers facilities. However, it's always wise to carry enough water and snacks for your entire ride, as other amenities may be limited directly on the trail.
