On this tour you ride almost entirely downhill with a slight gradient. The route repeatedly meets the railway tracks, so you can spontaneously shorten the route by taking the train. This tour is the first stage of the Drau cycle path, which skirts the source area of the Drau between Toblach and Innichen. The Drau cycle path continues for a total of 510 kilometers through Carinthia to the Croatian-Slovenian border near Varaždin.
It starts in Toblach at the train station. You ride through lush green meadows towards Innichen, the first of several beautiful towns that you will visit today. Shortly afterwards you cross the border between Italy and Austria. In terms of landscape, not much changes after the border: the entire cycle path is lined with mountains, the main Alpine ridge on the left and the Dolomites on the right.
In addition to the village and town centers, the South Tyrolean waffle factory near Silian, picnic areas by the river, the castle in Heinfels and the Galitzeklamm gorge make this tour exciting. The lavishly restored Heinfels Castle is particularly worth seeing. We recommend a guided tour, during which the halls, battlements and the castle chapel are also opened for you.
The destination of this tour is the train station in the sunny city of Lienz. The sun shines here for an average of over 2,000 hours a year. Ideal conditions for seeing the beautiful city and strolling along the rivers Drau and Isel.
