You start your hike at the Haleakalā Visitor Center on the edge of the impressive volcanic valley. In the center you can delve deeper into the history of the mountain and the region. The route then takes you along the Pā Ka’oao Trail to a viewpoint that offers you picturesque views of the crater and the rock walls.
You then hike along the path called Keonehe’ehe'e or Sliding Sands. The panorama looks as if it is not of this world, you seem to be on a moon expedition. Once you reach the split rock, you return to the visitor center the same way you came - but with more great views. Entrance to the national park costs $30 if you come by car. It is $15 if you walk or bike.
