Hiking

The BaldeneySteig leads you once around the Baldeneysee. With its well-marked hiking trails, it offers you a unique nature experience. And that right in the middle of the big city. The landscape along the trail is pleasingly varied. While steep forests, narrow paths, and grand views dominate north of the lake, the south side is characterized by wide fields and traces of mining history. Now and then, the trail passes houses and settlements, but overall, the route is surprisingly close to nature for a metropolitan area. Mostly far from paved shore paths, the trail thus offers everything hikers love. In addition to the main route, you can explore four side trails. These worthwhile detours lead you to special viewpoints and sights located along the way. By the way: You don't have to walk the entire distance; the ships of Weissen Flotte Baldeney GmbH, the Hespertalbahn, and public transport make it possible to hike parts of the Steig. This also allows the starting point to be varied as desired. You can find more Steige in Essen in this collection: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/collection/2558567/.

St. Aegidius Hermitage Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The Klusen Chapel of St. Ägidius was probably built before 1300. The walls are made of Ruhr sandstone and the roof is made of slate. Two Gothic colored glass windows are installed on the south side. The Klusen Chapel's namesake, St. Giles, was considered the patron saint against infectious diseases. It is assumed that at the beginning the chapel served as a place of protection for a woman suffering from leprosy.

The loosely decorated half-timbered houses in the Baldeney district once belonged to the Vittinghoff-Schell family, but today they are owned by individuals.

Dilldorfer Höhe Playground

Highlight • Rest Area

The Dilldorfer Höhe housing estate was built in 1999 on the site of the Ruhrland barracks, which was closed in 1994. However, as one might expect from the name, it is not located in the Dilldorf district, but in the Kupferdreh district.

Haus Scheppen: Ruins and Marina

Highlight • Historical Site

The Scheppen family was once a noble fiefdom of Werden Abbey and was one of the largest feudal estates in Werden in the Middle Ages. Of the formerly closed four-wing complex, only a partial ruin remains, which is surrounded by moats. The parking lot in front of the complex is a popular meeting place for motorcyclists and day trippers, especially in summer. There is also a pier for the “White Fleet Baldeney” at Haus Scheppen.

Am Schmalscheid Pastoral Landscape

Highlight • Viewpoint

It doesn't get more idyllic than this: cows moo, it smells of cow and fresh grass, bees buzz and larks traverse the sky with bobbing flight. Congratulations to this farmer and his animals for this paradise-like nature.

At the Essen viewpoint “Heissiwald” you get a wonderful view of the historic district of Werden, the Ruhr, the impressive dam and the beginning of Lake Baldeney. The Essen viewpoint “Heissiwald” is one of a total of 32 viewing points that were put together in 2017 on the occasion of the city being named “European Green Capital”. The viewing points offer an ideal view of the green city of Essen.

Since 1964, visitors of all ages have been able to admire red and fallow deer, wild boar, and mouflon in the Heissiwald enclosure. View of Villa Hügel

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you can catch a glimpse of the Villa Hügel. It quickly becomes clear that their builder, Alfred Krupp, was not a friend of modesty: From a distance, the building looks gigantic. It has 8,100 square meters of living and usable space and accommodates 269 rooms - up to 570 employees were responsible for the Krupp's royal household. How nice, if a quiet forest with beautiful trails enough to be completely satisfied. :)

Today again on foot. In contrast to the Kettwig panorama dough, I can really recommend the Baldeney dough. Lots of single trails, good views, a good mix of forest and field. The only downer was the last 5 km, wide gravel road along the lake.

Today we met very few hikers and cyclists. A nice, quiet hike in the best hiking weather! By the way ... the Baldeneysteven is always worth it.

Showing Translation

Walked the Baldeneysteig in pleasant hiking weather. Routing is demanding as well as the signage. In some places, sure-footedness is required. Because of the inclines, fitness is required for the route. It was fun again. Glad I could be there.

The Baldeneysteig in the forest is really beautiful. Footpaths, clearings and also a small ridge. But there is also a very long stretch along the promenade along the lake, where you have to make the way with a lot of other walks and cyclists when the weather is nice. The biggest disadvantage of the hike is the buying for new …

I did record a tour, but I didn't share it – the focus was simply completely on the shared experience 😊. DoKomi lasts three days and started yesterday. …

Today I just did a little lap to see how things are going after Corona got me too. It went to the Baldeneysteig in Essen, which leads a good 25 km around the Baldeneysee. I hiked the clockwise from Villa Hügel but counter to the classic direction.

I like to be inspired by Komootlers whom I follow and who I just find good 😉. I saved my tour today from Sarah Wandert a long time ago 👍😊. To run this lap I had to somehow create a time window for myself, because it happened to me that for a good 20 years my wife has always met …

At the eastern end of Lake Baldeney, the crossing over the former railway bridge is closed until further notice. This necessitates a roughly 2 km detour northwards via the Kampmann Bridge. In Heisingen, do not follow Stauseebogen Road (as cyclists do), but instead take the scenic lakeside path to the
