Since I only had to work until 12 p.m. on Monday, I thought that I would finally have to put my plan into action to walk the Kettwiger Panoramasteig. The fantastic weather somehow suited this 😎 I underestimated the time and the sun setting earlier and earlier, so I had to walk the last few kilometers in the dark. But mainly it was probably because I sat with a beer in Kettwig for a little too long 😉 Overall, I liked the climb better than expected. I find it more beautiful and varied than the Baldeneysteig. Let's see what else can be done in terms of the 2000km milestone. I still have over 700km to hike this year. My friend Tanja says that I can't do it anymore. So I think that's still there! ☝️😁
The early bird... ... sets off on the PanoramaSteig at 6:15 a.m. in Essen-Werden, although that was actually a little too early, because due to our lack of local knowledge we had to switch on the lamp on our smartphones after just one kilometer, as the narrow, downward path led a little into the unknown without light. 😉 But after just two kilometers, dusk set in over the south of Essen and hiking during sunrise was no problem again, so that we could enjoy the paths of the PanoramaSteig. 🥾 Speaking of panorama: The humidity has also woken up from its sleep, so that the hike through the fields, forests and meadows of the south of Essen was very beautiful even with the wonderful air, but on the first 2/3 of the way to Kettwig the panoramas remained hidden in the fog, as my visibility was a maximum of 150 meters. 🤷🏻♂️ After a decent break on the Ruhr in Kettwig, the fog had also cleared, so that the remaining 15 kilometers of the really great hiking tour also had their fair share of distant views. 🌞 If there was something at the end that could be left out next time, it is not the fog, as it did not detract from the hike in any way, but the direction of the wind, which ensured that a plane flew over us every 60 to 120 seconds for the entire 7 hours, as the PanoramaSteig was exactly under the flight path of Düsseldorf airport today. 🙉 All further information can be found here: https://www.ich-geh-wandern.de/kettwiger-panoramasteig Conclusion: Special praise to Essen Marketing GmbH: great trail 💚
Very nice path with great views and many paths. I walked the route clockwise and found the first half more varied than the second.

Today I explored the Kettwiger Panoramasteig, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Ruhr region. The approximately 35-kilometer route leads through idyllic forests, over rolling hills, and offers breathtaking views of the Ruhr and the surrounding countryside. I was particularly impressed by the diverse landscape and the tranquility far from the hustle and bustle of the city. In some places, steep climbs tested my fitness ("and just when you think you can't go any further, another climb appears from somewhere 😂"), but the magnificent panoramic views were definitely worth the effort. A perfect day to enjoy nature and clear my head.
Template🤷♀️👉 http://www.ich-geh-wandern.de/kettwiger-panoramasteig 🅿️https://maps.app.goo.gl/j7A4WG95wNWFf4LH8 I can't remember where I got my tour template from - at least it often didn't match the marked one. The markings were mostly continuous, but they also confused me in a few places...or did I mix up the signs with those on the Baldeneysteig? 🤔🙃 🛒 A visit to the Buchholz farm shop is also worthwhile (also open on Sundays and public holidays) - unexpectedly large, would have liked to take something with you, but the queue at the checkout was just too long.💁♀️ https://www.buchholzhof-hofladen.de/
You might think it's crazy to do a tour like this on the hottest day of the year so far. But without crazy ideas it would be boring and what's agreed is agreed. 😄 Due to the course of the route we had a lot of sun and unfortunately also a lot of asphalt. At the beginning we went through forests, but as soon as you leave them and walk through the fields of Schuir and Kettwig you walk on the road. This section, which is partly close to the A52, was rather unpleasant. As we continued on, challenging single trails alternated with unattractive asphalt strips. In some places even narrow forest paths are asphalted, what nonsense. Overall asphalt or gravel predominates, my feet really don't like that. And the pleasant sections are unfortunately overshadowed by it. Due to the temperatures we treated ourselves to a few breaks and were more leisurely on the way. The plus point of an urban tour: the possibility of buying chilled drinks along the way. 😄 The various "Essen views" actually offer a view of the nearby greenery through the overgrown lines of sight. All in all, the area around Kettwig and Werden is interesting and offers beautiful hiking trails, especially if you want to gain altitude. Unfortunately, the PanoramaSteig offers other routes and it is enough for me to have walked the circuit once. Of the three Essen climbs that I now know, this is the one I like the least.
It was a really nice tour again. I'm always amazed at how beautiful our Ruhr area is 😁😁😁. I can definitely recommend this trail too. Provided you don't have too many problems with asphalt... It's very varied and the views are really great!

We hiked the trail at the weekend after the Baldeneysteig in two day stages (Werden-Kettwig and Kettwig-Werden) and I can only confirm what "visitessen" wrote, although the asphalted sections didn't seem that long to me. All in all, a very beautiful and recommendable trail.
