Brockenhurst Village: Highlights

Highlight • Rest Area

Brockenhurst is named after a Saxon manor known as Broceste in the Domesday Book. It's also traditionally said to mean 'Badger Hill Wood', although 'Broken Wooded Hill' might be more likely as the area is divided by many streams.

Bolderford Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

At Bolderford Bridge the tributaries of Ober Water and Highland Water join to become the Lymington River which flows into the Solent at Lymington.

During the summer months, this section of riverine woodland is a popular destination for visitors to rest, whilst during the winter the woodland helps to slow the water flow through the village. Riverine woodlands are also important wildlife corridors and in the summer look for dragonflies and maybe glimpse a kingfisher which nests in the river banks.

Valley Mires, or bogs, are natural catchments of water in a valley bottom and have their own special communities of plants and insects.

Starting at the woodland edge, look for bog myrtle, a low growing evergreen shrub with a distinctive resinous eucalyptus-like smell that can be used to repel insects. Further along the path, look for the round-leaved sundew, a plant that feeds on insects using the red sticky hairs on its leaves to catch them.
