Hiking

The Old Riverbank Trail cuts through all the habitats of the floodplain. Starting at Orth Castle on the Danube, you first hike through the dry hardwood floodplain, where you'll encounter maple, ash, and walnut trees. From a bridge, you'll get beautiful views of an oxbow lake.

The trail continues along the Fadenbach stream, and after crossing the flood protection dam, you enter the softwood floodplain. Here, poplars dominate. Ancient giants collapse, and mighty mushrooms grow from the seemingly dead wood. Views of the oxbow lake open up again and again.

Shortly before reaching the riverbank road, the route branches off to the right and runs along a ditch to another side channel. Herons and kingfishers come here to hunt. Hops and grapevines climb along the narrow forest path. Finally, you reach the meadow near Humer's Riverside House and then the Danube.

This linear hike can be wonderfully used as a connection between other routes. However, keep in mind that it is either impassable or only partially accessible during high water.

Some hiking trails near Orth an der Donau and Eckartsau in the sections between the castle and the Marchfeld dam, as well as the Stopfenreuther Uferstraße, can be used by wheelchair in suitable weather conditions.

Orth Castle on the Danube, National Park Center

Highlight • Castle

The visitor center of the Donau-Auen National Park is located in Orth Castle. A guided tour with interesting facts about the national park lasts around an hour. This is supported by the AuTheater and the climb to the observation tower is also worth it. 😊👍

About the Fadenbach

Highlight • River

The Fadenbach is a former branch of the Danube. Building materials for the castle were once transported here by ship. Today it is just a narrow stretch of water.

Between 1998 and 2001, Martin Zöberl painstakingly built the Orth/Donau ship mill on the opposite side of the river with the help of carpenters.

Today the floating mill offers an insight into the life of ship millers in historical times. You can visit the museum after a ride on the Chaika.
