This route was planned by komoot.
The trail can be started from either end. Popular starting points with parking include Praia da Marinha or Praia do Vale Centeanes. You can also find parking near Benagil or Praia do Carvalho, allowing you to customize your hike.
While dogs are generally allowed on the trail, it's important to keep them on a leash due to the clifftop nature and uneven terrain. Some beaches along the route may have restrictions, especially during peak season, so check local signage.
The best time to hike is during spring (March to May) when wildflowers bloom and temperatures are mild, or in autumn (September to November) after the summer heat subsides. Summer can be very hot, making an early start essential, and winter can bring rain, making some sections slippery.
No, there are no permits required or entrance fees to hike the Sete Vales Suspensos trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is primarily a clifftop walk, characterized by rugged limestone cliffs. You'll encounter rough, uneven, rocky, and occasionally slippery paths, especially after rain. There are also occasional steep climbs and descents. The path includes natural and gravel sections, with smaller portions of unpaved, paved, and asphalt surfaces.
This route offers spectacular views and unique geological features. Highlights include the stunning Marinha Beach, the famous Benagil Caves (viewable from above), the Farol de Alfanzina lighthouse, and the picturesque Vale de Centeanes Beach. You'll also see numerous sea stacks, arches, and natural wells carved into the cliffs.
The full circular route, which is approximately 11.5 km (7.1 miles) long, typically takes around 3 hours to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace, how many stops you make for photos, and whether you spend time exploring the beaches.
While generally considered of moderate difficulty, the trail's uneven, rocky terrain and occasional steep sections mean good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended. It might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to hiking. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential for everyone.
Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential due to the rocky and uneven terrain. Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months, as there are limited facilities directly on the trail. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen) is also crucial, as much of the route is exposed. A camera is a must for the incredible views!
While the trail itself is mostly natural, you'll find cafes and restaurants near the main starting points and beaches like Praia da Marinha, Benagil, and Praia do Vale Centeanes. These are good spots to refuel before or after your hike.
To avoid the intense summer sun and crowds, start your hike early in the morning. Always stick to the marked paths and avoid cliff edges, as some overhangs can be precarious. Consider bringing binoculars for spotting marine life or distant rock formations.
You can either walk back to the starting point or (which worked really well) take an Uber for about €8
This hike is a must in the Algarve! Beautiful path, partly very rocky, along the coast with its cliffs and bays. Even if you start early and with a hat - the way back is a bit warm. 🥵
Hiking along the coast here is very varied; every cove offers a different look, and the cliffs with their rugged, water-sculpted formations are truly impressive. However, the path isn't always easy, so surefootedness and sturdy footwear are essential. However, you'll also find tourists half-naked and wearing high-security toe clips.
Superb, unmissable hike with magnificent views! Accessible to anyone with good physical condition. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat because when the sun comes out, it gets hot 😀 Please note this is not a loop. 🙂
Today was our last day here, we are flying home tomorrow afternoon. That's why we chose this wonderful tour. There was a lot going on on the way there, in the afternoon after a break at the beach and a beer at the Benagil Beach Club we had the beautiful coastal path almost to ourselves. It was very nice here in the Algarve, maybe we'll come back again 😀
