Samson Fortress Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

The remains of the fortress of Samson are the ruins of an ancient fortress perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Samson and the Meuse. There you will find the remains of two towers and a wall which testify to the ancient prestige of this castle, which was one of the strongholds of the county of Namur and resisted attacks by the Normans in the 9th century. The fortress was demolished in 1691 on the orders of King Charles II of Spain and its stones were used to build many houses in the neighboring villages of Thon and Samson. You can admire the ruins from the valley entrance, but the site is not open to visitors. You can, however, enjoy the natural beauty of the region and discover the charming village of Thon-Samson, which is classified among the most beautiful villages in Wallonia.

Rochers de Samson

Highlight • Cave

Viewpoint marked on map. If you walk further on the "Sentier 20" you will come across a carved room with perpendicular rock wall. A little further on, at a boulder on the abyss, a back trail starts on the right that leads to a cave. You can enter the cave, but we discovered that the cave is used by the goats as a stable and when you visit the cave you get into a fight with yoyo the goat. So be careful, you are on the side of the rock face after all. Arm yourself with a good stick. (see highlight Panorama)

View of the Meuse Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

This vantage point is at the height of the "sentier 20". You see an old metal hut on which an antenna mast must have stood in the past. You can walk up to this loft for a first spectacular view!
Please note: this plateau is occupied by a group of goats. On the other side of the plateau there is a warning (poster) for the buck Jojo! It also says that you best arm yourself with a stick!

Thon Castle Farm

Highlight • Castle

The castle-farm of Thon is a castle-farm complex which dates back to the 14th century, when it was the seat of a feudal lordship. There you will find a medieval tower, a noble residence, a bakery, a farm and a small square tower along the wall. You can admire the castle farm from the outside, as it is privately owned, or book a guided tour to learn more about its history and architecture. The Thon castle-farm is one of the most exceptional monuments in the region and a testimony to the rural heritage of Wallonia.
