High Rock Overlook

Highlight • Viewpoint

High Rock is a park and overlook about an hour and a half outside of Baltimore and just off of the Appalachian Trail. There is a large graffitied rock (and surrounding rocks) with a great vantage point on the surrounding foothills. If you have the time, fill up a bag of trash because this local spot could use some love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this section of the Appalachian Trail suitable for jogging?

While the Komoot tour is categorized for jogging, the Appalachian Trail from Pen Mar to High Rock is generally considered challenging for continuous running. The terrain quickly becomes very rugged, featuring extensive boulder fields, large rocks, and a steep, stony ascent to High Rock. Many sections require careful navigation and may feel more like hiking than jogging, especially if you are not accustomed to highly technical trails.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

The trail starts with some smooth sections near Pen Mar Park, but quickly transitions to rugged conditions. You will encounter a 'rocky mess' with large boulders and extensive boulder fields, particularly as you approach High Rock. The ascent to High Rock is very rocky and steep, involving stony steps and switchbacks. This challenging footing contributes to its moderate to difficult rating.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

Key highlights include the historic Pen Mar Park at the start, which offers tremendous views of the Cumberland Valley. You'll also traverse the Appalachian Trail itself, crossing the Mason-Dixon Line between Maryland and Pennsylvania. The ultimate reward is the panoramic view from High Rock Overlook, which provides expansive vistas of Waynesboro, PA, and the surrounding farmlands.

Where can I park to access the trail?

The primary access point is Pen Mar Park, located at the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. There is parking available at the park, which serves as the trailhead for this section of the Appalachian Trail.

Is the trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the Appalachian Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the rugged and rocky terrain, ensure your dog is accustomed to such conditions and always keep them on a leash for their safety and the safety of other trail users and wildlife.

What is the best time of year to visit?

Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with spring bringing mountain laurel blooms and fall showcasing vibrant foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter conditions can make the already rocky trail more challenging due to ice or snow. Always check weather and trail conditions before heading out.

Are there any permits or fees required for this trail?

This section of the Appalachian Trail is located within South Mountain State Park. While there are typically no specific permits required for hiking this segment of the AT, it's always advisable to check the official South Mountain State Park website for any current regulations or entrance fees, especially if you plan to use park facilities.

How long does it typically take to complete this route?

The route is approximately 9.7 kilometers (6 miles) long. While the Komoot tour estimates a duration of about 1 hour and 20 minutes for jogging, due to the difficult and rocky terrain, hikers should expect it to take longer, potentially 2-3 hours or more, depending on pace and stops at viewpoints.

Does this trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, this route is entirely along the Appalachian Trail. It also follows sections of the Tuscalachian Loop and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. A small portion of the route also runs along Blue Mountain Road.

What should I bring for this hike?

Given the rocky and steep terrain, sturdy hiking shoes or boots with good ankle support are highly recommended. Bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days, as there are no water sources directly on the trail. Snacks, a map or GPS device, and appropriate layers of clothing are also advisable. Trekking poles can be very helpful for stability on the rocky ascents and descents.

Is this a loop trail or an out-and-back?

The described route from Pen Mar to High Rock is an out-and-back segment of the Appalachian Trail. You will return along the same path to Pen Mar Park.
