Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Los Gatos Creek Trail?

The terrain varies along the trail. The northern and central sections, especially through Campbell and Los Gatos, are generally paved and mostly flat, ideal for leisure riding. As you head south towards Lexington Reservoir, the last 1.5 miles become unpaved dirt and gravel, with some rocky portions and a notable climb to the dam at about a 10% grade. You'll also encounter wooden bridges and elevated sections.

Is the Los Gatos Creek Trail suitable for beginners?

Yes, much of the trail is suitable for beginners. The paved, flatter sections, particularly in the northern and central parts through Campbell and Los Gatos, are considered easy and accessible for casual riders. However, the southern section leading to Lexington Reservoir is more challenging due to its unpaved surface and significant uphill grades, so beginners might want to stick to the easier northern and central portions.

What can I see along the route?

The trail offers diverse scenery. You'll ride alongside the beautiful Los Gatos Creek, often surrounded by natural riparian growth. It passes through several parks, including Los Gatos Creek Park, Vasona Lake County Park, and Oak Meadow Park. Highlights include Vasona Lake, known for its beauty and recreational activities, and Camden Ponds. The trail also connects to urban areas like downtown Campbell and Los Gatos, offering access to shops and dining.

Where can I park to access the trail?

There are numerous parking options along the trail. Popular access points with amenities like parking include Oak Meadow Park and Vasona County Park. The Los Gatos Creek Trail (Vasona Park Entrance) is a convenient starting point with parking available.

Is the Los Gatos Creek Trail dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, dogs must be kept on a leash at all times, and you are responsible for cleaning up after your pet. Always check specific park regulations if you plan to enter any of the county parks along the route, as rules may vary slightly.

What is the best time of year to visit the trail?

The trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring and fall offer the most pleasant weather for cycling. Summers can be warm, while winters are generally mild. Be aware that sections of the trail, particularly underpasses, can be prone to temporary closures due to flooding during heavy rains.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Los Gatos Creek County Park?

Generally, there is no entrance fee to access the Los Gatos Creek Trail itself. However, if you are parking within certain county parks along the route, such as Vasona Lake County Park, there might be a parking fee. Always check the official Santa Clara County Parks website for the most current information regarding fees and regulations.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the Los Gatos Creek Trail is a crucial part of a larger network. It connects the Lexington Reservoir to the San Francisco Bay Trail via other class 1 trails and street connections. The route also passes through sections of the South of I-280 Corridor and the Willow Glen Los Gatos Creek Trail.

Are there restrooms and water available along the trail?

Yes, the trail offers numerous amenities along its route. You'll find restrooms, drinking fountains, and picnic areas at various access points, particularly within parks like Oak Meadow Park and Vasona County Park.

What are some insider tips for cycling this trail?

For a more leisurely ride, stick to the northern and central paved sections. If you're looking for a challenge, head south towards Lexington Reservoir for the unpaved terrain and the 10% grade climb to the dam. To avoid crowds, especially on weekends, consider visiting earlier in the morning. The trail is multi-use, so be mindful of walkers, runners, and other cyclists.
