This 7.0-mile (11.2 km) route, with 2252 feet (686 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 4 hours and 39 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, from old military roads and well-defined trails through larch forests to grassy ridges on the ascent to Monte Bert. Along the way, enjoy spectacular panoramic views, including the imposing Rocca la Meja and the vibrant green plateau of Gardetta. The emerald waters of Lago Nero, reflecting Monviso on clear days, offer an enchanting sight amidst sparse larch woods and alpine meadows.

To begin your hike, head to Grange Selvest, where the loop typically starts by following a dirt road and then trails. While the trail is generally moderate, some sections require good physical fitness and sure-footedness. The total duration can range from 4 to 6 hours, depending on your pace and any stops you make. Consider hiking in autumn, as the larch trees around Lago Nero display particularly vibrant colors during this season.

This trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical elements. You will encounter old military roads that add a historical dimension to your journey. Keep an eye out for scattered

Trail Reviews

Katia Sacco
November 15, 2023, Lago Nero, giro ad anello da Grange Selvest

Very pleasant circular tour in a secluded and extremely panoramic environment. Today the extraordinary day and the climate not yet too cold gave us enchanting views and the last autumn colours. I recommend following the ring starting from Grange Selvest, towards Grange Colombero...

The ring tour of the black lake is. Very beautiful and in addition to the wonderful lake it offers glimpses of very beautiful mountain views .. Without being too tiring, despite the 680 meters of difference in altitude that will result at the end of the tour.. I advise you to go around taking the dirt road to the left, once you have crossed the bridge over the river The ascent to the lake, even if a little longer, is certainly less tiring... once the dirt road is finished and there is an asphalted stretch that is even harder, the path turns right and continues. In the midst of larches and au pastures up to the wonderful black lake.. On the way back, once the more demanding stretch that leads from the Gardetta side is finished, you arrive at a crossroads with a trail sign, which also leads to the plaque commemorating the tragedy of the Alpine soldiers (10 minute walk). We then return to the path which then becomes a dirt road in the middle of the larches until we reach the starting point from the parking lot where we started.

Very nice but quite challenging tour, the total km is 14, the slopes indicated are correct, we found many sections with snow and it wasn't easy to enjoy even rain and hail coming down fortunately small but our furry friends didn't like it 😡 Beautiful the views and the lake 👍👍

Departed from the Grange Culausa to the Black Lake Monte Boret. And back from Grange Valletta. 🌤🌦⛅️👍

Beautiful tour with a tough descent over goat paths. Today is Saturday, so the Italians are going out. It wasn't busy up there at the lake, but we weren't alone either. Nice to see that everyone takes the time to climb up for 2 hours and then have a nice picnic. I even saw a bottle of wine. And we were also offered a glass 🍷 after I shouted: 'la vita è bella!' I kindly declined, and that was a good thing because the descent was a lot steeper than up😉

Excursion with breathtaking landscapes that arrives at the Black Lake. It starts from the Grange Selvest, Canosio. Cross the wooden bridge and, past a larch wood, you reach the panoramic Grange Culausa, where the path begins with a view of Rocca la Meja. After the pass (2304 m), you descend towards the basin of Lago Nero, overlooking the Preit di Canosio valley. Staying on the right side of the lake, take the descent towards Grange Chiacarloso (2080), which continue towards grange Colombero Sottano. If desired, the journey can be extended slightly and visit the Tombstone of the Alpini, a monument erected on 30 January 1937, in honor of the twenty-three Alpine troops who perished in an avalanche. The end of the excursion is on a dirt road, which leads to Grange Selvest, therefore the starting point.

At the Strop dam, turn left towards Marmora and then towards Canosio/Preit. Departure from the Grange Selvest car park, which from this year costs €5. I didn't have any change, so I parked in a lot about 1 km below. In reality the destination was Mount Bert, but the path is not signposted and despite Komoot, I couldn't find it, so I did the Black Lake ring for the umpteenth time. Always beautiful! Bring your swimsuit: it was full of people swimming!
