Road cycling

The ‘lost dale’ of Bransdale – north of Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley – is a gem, smaller and more remote than the dales on either side, only accessible on a single road that loops around the flanking moors via the dalehead at Cockayne.

There is no village in the dale – just a necklace of farmhouses set halfway up the dale sides, a shooting lodge and an old mill – while most of the farmland is owned by the National Trust. Ousegill Bridge is another highlight - a beautiful stone bridge in the middle of moorlands.

Consequently, Bransdale retains a serene, traditional character, with little to get in the way of the fabulous cycling. From the remote village of Cockayne, there are many kilometres of solitude before you reach Helmsley to the south.

The final southern section – cutting through the villages south of the A170 – rewards you with a string of cafés and country pubs as you follow the quieter back roads from Helmsley to Kirkbymoorside.

Ousegill Bridge

Highlight • Structure

A gorgeous bridge over Ouse Gill, a tributary of Hodge Beck. Set in the stunning Bransdale moorlands. I've seen this beautiful stone bridge described by others as "photogenic". There is just something enchanting about British moorlands that is unmatched by just about any other places in the world.

It'd be easy to make a stop here next to the bridge, to rest, relax and enjoy this place before returning to civilisation.

St Nicholas Church, Cockayne

Highlight • Settlement

It's worth making a stop at the beautiful village of Cockayne. You'll probably be tempted to with me urging you just by looking at the settlement from above on Bransdale Road.

In particular, it's worth stopping at St Nicholas Church, a Grade-II listed building, with some benches available just for you to sit on, with amazing views of this gorgeous area from there.

Bransdale is a hidden gem of the North York Moors. There is a single-lane road which loops around the dale from Helmsley, up to Cockayne and down to Kirbymoorside which is a fantastic 44km road ride. This is known as the Bransdale Loop or the Cockayne Loop.

The land is mostly owned by the National Trust and there are no villages, only farm houses, so it feels very remote and quiet compared to other areas of the Moors. It really is worth visiting.

Cowhouse Bank Climb

Highlight • Climb

Cowhouse Bank Climb is a 4th category climb with an average gradient of 3.8%. It's a long one at 2.52km but on a single-lane quiet road with views of the moors all around.

Common Lane and Wombleton Airfield War Memorial

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

A wonderfully straight, with only a few bends here and there, Common Lane between Harome and Wombleton, offers terrific opportunities to put those pedals into fast motion: it's also rural and quiet here with very little traffic. Enjoy!

Halfway, next to the road, you will see a rather interesting-looking war memorial (near Cote Garth), dedicated to the Canadians and the men and women of the RAF who served at Wombleton during WW2.
