The former railway line (now known as the ‘Cinder Track’) which links Scarborough to Ravenscar (and Whitby) is one of the foremost cycle routes in the UK.

There are some great sea views from over the cliffs on the way, but also spots of historical interest: old station houses at Staintondale and Cloughton and a World War 2 radar station at Ravenscar. Among the highlights is Ravenscar itself – a proposed Victorian resort, dubbed ‘The Town That Never Was’. The beach at Hayburn Wyke, a bit off the track but well-worth making a detour for - must be among the most beautiful coastal places in Britain.

There is also a selection of places to eat and drink right on the track, which makes it particularly well suited to family cycling.

Ravenscar Tearooms

Highlight • Cafe

A quaint little tearoom located at the end of Station Road in Ravenscar is conveniently on the Cinder Track route between Whitby and Scarborough. Really friendly staff, plenty of seating inside and out and more importantly really good food. I'm not one for cakes, but these are amazing. It's probably best to check their Facebook page, close to your travelling, for opening times to avoid disappointment.

View from Common Cliff

Highlight • Natural Monument

Just to the east of the cycle track is Common Cliff, barely a few minutes ride south of the village of Ravenscar. The cliff offers captivating views to the north along the coast to Robin Hood's Bay.

A brief pedal further along the Cliff to the east, there's Ravenscar Radar Station, which was used during World War II - you might want to check that out.

Stainton Dale Former Station House

Highlight • Monument

This used to be one of the numerous stations on a line between Scarborough and Redcar.

The station opened in 1885 initially as "Staintondale" to become "Stainton Dale" in 1937, and eventually closed in 1965. It is now a very picturesque private house.

Hayburn Wyke Waterfall

A stunning waterfall off the Cinder Trail, with camping and a pub nearby.

Hayburn Wyke is a stunning secluded cove between Scarborough and Whitby. With the beach and woodland to discover, this hidden gem is the perfect setting for a picnic or a day of exploration.

Cloughton Old Station and Millennium Milepost

Highlight • Structure

This was an old train station, opened in 1885 and closed in 1965. These days it's a private dwelling, but there's also guest accommodation provided in the converted railway carriage.

Next to the old train station, there's one of the intriguing Millennium Mileposts, informing you of the distance to both Scarborough and Whitby.

Scalby Beck Viaduct

Highlight • Structure

This is an old railway viaduct near what was Scalby railway station. Long since closed; no real description remains of the station. But it's worth stopping on the viaduct to look at the Beck from high above, offering pleasant views!
