This route was planned by komoot.
This route is generally considered moderate in difficulty. While some sections are accessible, expect steep and rocky parts, especially around Cabo da Roca and the descent to Praia da Ursa. The path can be loose and slippery, requiring good hiking shoes and sometimes using hands for balance. It features a mix of natural paths, mountain hiking paths, and some paved or gravel sections.
The route typically starts near Praia da Adraga. There is usually parking available in the vicinity of the beach, which serves as a convenient starting point for this circular route.
This route connects several iconic landmarks. You'll experience the picturesque Adraga Beach with its unique rock formations, the dramatic cliffs of Cabo da Roca (the westernmost point of mainland Europe), and the stunning, secluded Ursa Beach, known for its sea stacks. Don't miss the incredible View of Praia da Ursa (Ursa Beach) from above.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, given the challenging and sometimes steep terrain, especially around Praia da Ursa, ensure your dog is fit for the hike. It's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially near cliffs and in areas with other hikers or wildlife.
The best time to hike this route is typically during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October). During these periods, the weather is usually milder, and the trails are less crowded than in peak summer. Summer can be very hot with little shade, while winter might bring more challenging weather conditions and slippery paths.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail. It is located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, which is freely accessible to the public. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
Given the coastal exposure and varied terrain, you should pack plenty of water, as there is a lack of shade along much of the route. Essential items include sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), layers of clothing for changing weather, snacks, and a first-aid kit. A walking stick can also be beneficial for stability on steep sections.
Yes, this route incorporates sections of several other trails. You will hike along parts of the Trilho das Areias, the Caminho do Atlântico (Troço Azoia-Adraga), and the Caminho do Atlântico (Troço Adraga - Maçãs). It also includes segments of Rua das Palmeiras, Rua do Atlântico, and the path known as Way to Ursa beach.
Yes, you can swim at both Praia da Adraga and Praia da Ursa. However, be aware that the Atlantic waters can be cold and currents strong. Praia da Ursa is particularly wild and secluded, with no lifeguard supervision, so exercise caution. Always check local conditions before entering the water.
Absolutely! Praia da Adraga is renowned for its diverse geology, featuring Jurassic limestone and Cretaceous formations, including sea arches. Along the coast, you might even find areas with fossilized dinosaur footprints. Praia da Ursa is famous for its dramatic sea stacks and rock formations.
While the route is circular, many hikers find it strategic to tackle the particularly steep and potentially slippery descent to Praia da Ursa when they are fresher. Starting from Praia da Adraga and heading towards Cabo da Roca before descending to Praia da Ursa can be a good approach, allowing you to enjoy the stunning views of Ursa Beach from above before the challenging descent.
Great tour. The way there goes up and down directly along the cliffs. You have to be careful in some places. It's quite steep in places and the ground is loose. The way back inland is much more relaxed, but the views aren't as spectacular.
Even if the Runddweg runs for the most part on easily accessible paths, the passages in between are tough. The path is very steep in parts. and tight. It is usually well marked, but a GPX track is still helpful. It definitely requires a proper basic level of fitness and kick shyness. The path sometimes runs directly on the steep coast without any protection. A head for heights is then a good prerequisite. Even if the way back runs a bit off the coast and has few technical challenges in store, it still has its scenic charm.
The stated time is wrong. You should plan for at least 3 hours. More like 4 hours. And there's probably a few more meters of elevation gain than stated. I have no idea why Komoot is so wrong.
