The Charmant Som

This pretty route leads to the ascent of one of the emblematic peaks of the Chartreuse: the Charmant Som. It is one of the rare summits of the massif in a rounded shape. Bordered by meadows and easily accessible, it stands as a unique belvedere of the Chartreuse. The route includes a kilometer-height difference ratio which is intended for intermediate and experienced practitioners.

The starting point is in the center of Saint-Pierre-de Chartreuse. You leave the village by taking the Porte de l’Enclos passage. This natural opening marks the start of a long climb, of around 1,000 meters of positive altitude difference towards the Charmant Som.

The ascent begins by crossing a few hamlets before diving into a long wooded section. You first follow a wide track before continuing on a narrower path that winds around the foothills of the mountain. When the view finally clears, the terrain becomes rockier and more playful. Take the time to turn around to observe the breathtaking view of the valley.

When you reach the Charmant Som hostel, the summit is approaching. A final effort leads to the highest point of the route. The 360 view is breathtaking, it rewards the efforts made during this long climb. If you wish, you can stop for a moment at the inn before starting the descent back to the starting point. This begins with an asphalt portion up to the Orgeval oratory. Enjoy the view one last time before diving into the forest. You embark on a descent which begins with fairly technical passages. Gradually the path becomes smoother.

As the trees part, you approach the valley floor. You embark on a very pleasant section which runs along a river. The path leads to a designated play area. From there, you join the Guiers Mort course. You follow the stream for a moment before starting the short, but steep, climb which leads to the center of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse.
