This beautiful loop leads to the discovery of one of the emblematic peaks of the Chartreuse: the Grand Som. Located in the heart of the massif, it dominates the village of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse and offers incredible 360-degree views. The kilometer-height difference ratio reserves this route for intermediate and experienced practitioners.
From the center of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, you start by going down into the village before taking a small path. The trail goes deeper into the forest and offers a sequence of a small climb and a short descent, ideal for warming up. You then reach the Grande Chartreuse museum. The site relates the history and influence of the monks on the massif and offers a wonderful overview of their way of life.
From then on, the route climbs through the heart of the forest until reaching the Col de Bovinant. You gradually gain height on a very pleasant path. Along the way, don't miss the magnificent views of the Chartreuse monastery, nestled in the hollow of the valley.
The last portion of the climb is on more open and rocky terrain. When you see the summit cross, you are only a few steps from the highest point of the route: the Grand Som. Located in the heart of the massif, it offers panoramas of the Chamechaude, the Charmant Som, the Petit Som and the Dent de Crolles.
The return to the starting point is almost all downhill. It is done by diving below the summit on a portion which includes some technical parts. As you progress, the slope softens and the path becomes smoother. It eventually leads to the heights of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse where the loop ends.
