Refugio del Pilar

Highlight • Mountain Hut

In our case it was the starting point of two of our E-Bike routes. From there and with easy access for vehicles and with free parking you have infinite possibilities to explore the island.

The Refugio del Pilar is a well-known landmark on the island of La Palma, located in the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. This refuge is located in a strategic place in the middle of the caldera, surrounded by impressive mountainous landscapes and virgin nature.

El Refugio del Pilar is a popular place for hikers and nature lovers who want to explore the beauty of the National Park. It serves as a starting point or stop for various routes and trails that cross the Caldera de Taburiente.

The refuge has basic facilities for visitors, such as rest areas, camping areas and basic services. It is an ideal place to take a break, enjoy a picnic or spend the night if you are doing a longer expedition in the park.

From the Refugio del Pilar, visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountain landscapes and the Caldera de Taburiente in all its splendor. It is also a common starting point to ascend to the highest peaks on the island, such as Roque de los Muchachos, where the famous Astrophysical Observatory is located.

If you plan to visit the Refugio del Pilar, make sure you take with you everything you need for your stay, such as water, food, camping equipment, and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. In addition, it is important to respect the natural environment and follow the regulations and recommendations established by the park authorities.

Birigoyo Peak

Highlight • Summit

Pico Birigoyo is on the Cumbre Vieja. This ridge stretches roughly in a north-south direction and, together with the Cumbre Nueva, which adjoins to the north from the Refugio El Pilar, forms the central mountain range on the southern half of the island of La Palma. The Cumbre Vieja is of volcanic origin. It consists of lava, tuff and volcanic ash. Numerous craters line up. The views from there are sensational.

Highlight • Summit

The Montana la Barquita is one of the mountains on the Cumbre Vieja with wonderful views. For example, on the Pico Birigoyo or on the caldera further to the north.

February 20, 2025,Kanarische Inseln 2025 - Tour 3 (La Palma) - Rund um Pico Birigoyo
After our tour of the island yesterday, we set out today with a fantastic blue sky, fresh wind and a cool 12° C to hike a bit on La Palma's volcano route.
We started at the hiking car park of the Refugio El Pilar at an altitude of almost 1500m. First we walked through a pine forest with Canary Island …

If there is a scale of the 10 most beautiful hikes on La Palma, then this one definitely belongs on it. The views from Pico Birigoyo and the challenging path to get there are simply great! Hard to top. But - as always a but - you need to be well rested and have some stamina for the climb, it's …

The last hike in 2022 begins in EL PINAR on La Palma. The first half is always through the forest on forest roads, later it gets much nicer on single paths with great views. Unfortunately, visibility at the top was very poor due to fog. It's good to have warm clothes with you. I wish all hikers an eventful 2023!

The morning started - after breakfast - with a view of Santa Cruz beach and then continued to maroparque.es
A very nice and non-commercial animal park.

Then in the early afternoon up to the El Pilar hiking area. If you have left the cloud layer between 800 and 1200 m altitude, the sky is only blue. El Pilar is at …

This year our first tour from Refugio El Pilar. And that in typical La Palma weather: sun - fog in constant alternation, until the sun finally gained the upper hand on the way from the Llano de Mosca up to the Pico Nambroque (LP 125 and then GR 131 Ruta de los Volcanos). The view above the clouds was great, …

A dream when the weather is nice 😃
On the way back you could experience live how the Canary Island pines capture the moisture of the trade wind clouds and bring it to rain.
