Hiking

Embark on a challenging 8.1-mile (13.1 km) hike through the Scottish Highlands, bagging two Munros with a total elevation gain of 3126 feet (953 metres). This difficult loop, typically taking around 5 hours and 2 minutes, offers varied terrain from well-maintained paths to rocky sections requiring some scrambling, especially towards the summit of Ben Lawers. From the top of Ben Lawers, you'll enjoy extensive panoramic views over Loch Tay and the surrounding mountains, while Meall Corranaich provides spectacular vistas back towards the Ben Lawers range and across Glen Lyon.

To prepare for this demanding route, start from the Ben Lawers National Trust for Scotland car park, which already gives you a significant head start at around 400-450 metres elevation. You will need good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy waterproof boots, as some sections can be boggy. Be aware that the difficulty increases considerably in snowy conditions or poor visibility, making careful navigation essential. There are also potential escape routes available if weather conditions deteriorate.

This loop is a popular way to conquer Ben Lawers, the highest peak in the Southern Highlands and the tenth highest Munro in Scotland, along with Meall Corranaich. The area is internationally significant for its rich biodiversity, particularly its rare Alpine flowers and diverse lichen flora, making it a treat for nature enthusiasts. Many parts of the trail feature incredibly well-maintained paths, a notable advantage in the Scottish mountains, ensuring a more pleasant journey through this dramatic landscape.

Ben Lawers Car Park and Monument

Highlight • Parking

Easy to find car park with plenty of spaces for ascending one of the many Munros in the area.

This is a National Trust for Scotland car park with a small charge. Paying for parking here helps to maintain the area and ensures visitors don't block the local roads.

Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve

Highlight • Viewpoint

The nature reserve is fenced off so that deer and sheep can't eat the rare plants that you find here. It's a good example of what would happen across the Highlands if deer numbers were reduced, and sheep kept off the land. The National Trust for Scotland manage the area. The nature reserve has a nice short circular walk that's great for families. Hikers walk through here on the way up Ben Lawers.

Beinn Ghlas

Highlight • Trail

On the usual route to Ben Lawers, it's Beinn Ghlas that dominates the view ahead, hiding its parent peak from view. This is a wonderfully accessible Munro, especially given its 3,619-foot (1,103 m) height, thanks to the high Ben Lawers car park.

Beinn Ghlas can be bypassed either in ascent or descent via a path that contours around its northern flanks. It's also possible to link Beinn Ghlas to Meall Corranaich to the northwest.

Ben Lawers summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

The culminating point of a sprawling mountain range to the north of Loch Tay, Ben Lawers is a very popular mountain – and with good reason. Celebrated flora and fauna, top-of-the-beanstalk views, a conveniently high car park at almost (1,600 feet) 500m, and a glorious multi-Munro ridge traverse are just a few of its appealing features.

Meall Corranaich summit

Highlight • Climb

Meall Corranaich is a 3,507-foot (1,069 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It's often climbed alongside Meall a' Choire Lèith but sometimes as part of a huge day with the five Munros in the Ben Lawers range. Views across to the Ben Lawers range are simply magnificent from the summit.

The blessing is also that this Munro climb starts at 1,800 feet (550 m) thanks to the tarmacked high mountain pass, so it's great for beginners or those wanting to build their hill fitness.

First ever munro and managed two. The route we took wasn't the best to hit Ben Lawers as we ended up going up Ben Ghlas first and the kids thought we'd done it.

After hitting the peak of Ghlas we had a bit of descent then back up Ben Lawers.
Stopped recording just before the summit of Ben Lawers (but my photos prove I was there with the trig point and cairn)
A bit like walking on the main road! Route soooo busy - gazillions of paragliders heading up plus queues to take pic at top of Ben Lawers! But lovely not technical walk. And it was a cracking hot day!
First two Munros of 2022 🤩 a sunny day at the bottom, but both summits were shrouded in cloud. Legs aching and self-doubt whispering after a long winter away from the hills. But we made it. Munro season is officially open!
An absolutely stunning weather day in Highland Perthside 😎. Ben Lawers is the tenth highest Munro though it's height is somewhat undermined by a high level car park to begin the ascent. Another Munro, Beinn Ghlas, passes by on the way up Ben Lawers (with apologies to the thousands who know all this! 🤓). Outstanding views on such a clear …
