Monnow Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Monnow Bridge is the only surviving mediaeval fortified river bridge in Britain where the gate tower stands on the bridge. As such, the bridge is Grade I-listed and has been designated as a Scheduled Monument. According to the local tradition, building work commenced in 1272 to replace a Norman timber bridge.

Once an important border castle, and birthplace of Henry V of England. In 1647 the site was reused and built over by Great Castle House, which has since become the headquarters and regimental museum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.

Monmouth Town Centre

Highlight • Settlement

Nestled in the lower reaches of the scenic Wye Valley is the historic county town of Monmouthshire. It is a popular choice as a base for exploring all the superb landscape has to offer.

Notable landmarks in the town include its medieval stone gated bridge, the last of its kind left in Britain, and Monmouth Castle, the birthplace of King Henry V in 1386.

St Peter's Church, Dixton

Highlight • Historical Site

There was probably a church here well before the Norman Conquest, but the current church dates to the 12th century, though it appears to incorporate stonework from an earlier, Saxon building. St Peter's is a pretty, whitewashed church.

Biblins Suspension Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Biblins Bridge is a suspension and rope bridge over the River Wye, right next to Biblins Youth Camp. The bridge makes for a quirky river crossing and affords lovely views upstream.

River Wye

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Wye was voted the nation’s favourite river in 2010. It starts not far from my home town in Brecon in mid-Wales and trundles south for some 150 miles before meeting the Severn. I have forgotten how many times I have cycled it, run it and kayaked it. Simply my favourite place on earth!

From Symonds Yat Rock you are afforded a stunning view over the picturesque Wye Valley. This viewpoint is one of the best places in the country to watch peregrine falcons. Keep a look-out for other birds, including sparrowhawks, ospreys, buzzards, and owls.

From Caldwell Rocks, you get a magnificent view over the Wye Valley. It is also a great spot to watch peregrine falcons. Around this area, archaeologists have uncovered bones from hyenas, sabre-toothed cats and a mammoth.

All Saints Church, Staunton

Highlight • Historical Site

All Saints is a late Norman church, dating from 1144, which has had numerous additions during the medieval period and the early nineteenth century. It has a five-bay nave, a chancel, south transept and north and south aisles, a gabled south porch and a central bell tower with clock and six bells. The tower is 12th century, but was added to in the 15th century.

The Kymin is an 18th-century round house and naval temple on a prominent hill, set within 9 acres (4 ha) of grounds. It's a fair slog from Monmouth but you are rewarded with wonderful views over the Wye Valley and the town below as you climb. Once you reach the top, the views are breathtaking and there are benches to stop and soak it all in. Absolute bliss. The site is owned by the National Trust.

Beaulieu Wood

Highlight • Viewpoint

Beaulieu Wood is an historic ancient woodland overlooking the town of Monmouth and the River Wye.

It has a bit of a 'fantasy' feel about it with a path winding through large moss covered boulders and ferns and gnarled and twisted birch and beech trees.
