This varied, short loop takes in the beautiful Rockland Broad, the River Yare, a pretty old church and a pub stop for some tasty grub at the finish line. As ever in the Broads, wildlife spotting opportunities are in good supply, with many bird species to admire.
For the first 2 miles (3.2 km), you share the trails with those walking the 38-mile (61 km) Wherryman’s Way, which runs from Norwich to the coast at Great Yarmouth. Leaving Rockland Staithe, the route explores RSPB Rockland Marshes nature reserve’s reedbeds, taking you around the southeastern shore of Rockland Broad. Pause at the bird hides to spot resident species, such as barn owls, great crested grebes, Cetti’s warblers and kingfishers, among others.
The trail continues alongside Short Dyke, which contacts the broad to the River Yare. After following the river downstream, the route then leaves the Wherryman’s Way behind, heading through the village of Claxton. Farm lanes lead to the pretty Church of St Mary the Virgin, with its fine 15th-century tower and impressive Norman door.
The final stretch brings you back to Rockland Staithe, where the New Inn can cater for your refreshment needs.
