Miwok Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Miwok Trail is the longest bike-legal trail that runs all the the way from Rodeo Valley/Gerbode Valley in the Southern Marin Headlands to Mt Tam in the North. Miwok runs up and down into Tennessee Valley over ridgelines not using the most efficient route, so there is a short section of Old Springs Trail on this segment that is preferable to climbing (pushing) bikes up a hikers-only segment to the intersection with Marincello Trail on the ridge before dropping into Tennessee Valley.

Muir Woods Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

When you reach the intersection of Highway 1 and Muir Woods Road, you might want to consider straying from the main loop a little bit to visit Muir Beach itself. It's worth a peek if you haven't been there before or if it's been a long while since you have.

The section of this loop on Highway 1 will have moderately heavy traffic on any weekend with good weather. Once you turn return to Muir Woods Road, though, the traffic is much lighter.

Deer Park Fire Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Deer Park Fire Road climbs north from the gate at Muir Woods Rd and turns into the short Redwood Creek Trail just before Cardiac Hill. It's steep on the first mile, a bit more mellow going through a Muir Woods section, then steeper on the last third again. Just before cutting through an impressive grove of towering Redwood trees views open up south to the Pacific.

Coast View Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Not only does Coast View Trail stage vistas of beautiful coastal hillsides and the ocean in front of you as you descend, but it also happens to be a very nice singletrack though perhaps a fairly wide one in some places. It's a really rare treat in Marin County, but this trail is pretty enough that it would have qualified as a treat even if singletracks were a dime a dozen in Marin. This is a beautiful singletrack descent by any standard.

Coast View Trail ends at Highway 1 near Muir Beach. Once you come all this way to Muir Beach, it would be a shame to leave without taking in the views from Muir Beach Overlook. The route shown on this page features a spur toward the overlook, though my visit there was thwarted at the time of the ride you see on this page due to some renovation going on at its parking lot

Shoreline Highway

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

When following the ride Mount Tam (Deer Park Road and Coast View Trail), you reach the Shoreline Highway, also called Highway 1 near Muir Beach, once you leave Coast View Trail. Once you come all this way to Muir Beach, it would be a shame to leave without taking in the views from Muir Beach Overlook.
