Kauhola Point Lighthouse Site

Highlight • Monument

This secluded cape was home to a long-standing lighthouse that was built in 1933. The lighthouse replaces an earlier wood lighthouse from the 1800's. Unfortunately the lighthouse was demolised recently and replaced with a metal marker to signify it's history.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the starting point and parking situation for this cycling loop?

The route typically starts near Kapa'au or Hawi, accessing the Old Kohala Mill Road. Parking is generally available in these towns, but specific trailhead parking for this remote section isn't explicitly detailed. It's best to plan your start from a convenient location in one of the nearby communities.

What is the terrain like on the Old Kohala Mill Road section of this route?

The Old Kohala Mill Road is primarily a rough dirt track. In dry conditions, it might be manageable for robust touring bikes. However, be prepared for it to become 'treacherously muddy,' 'rough, sloppy, and slick' after rain, potentially challenging even 4WD vehicles. Expect an unpaved, variable surface.

Is this cycling route suitable for beginners?

While the overall loop is rated 'easy' in terms of distance and elevation, the challenging terrain of the Old Kohala Mill Road section makes it more suited for cyclists with a good level of fitness and experience handling rough, unpaved surfaces. Beginners might find the muddy or rutted sections difficult.

What kind of scenery can I expect along the way?

You'll cycle through dryland forest before the route opens up to a grassy peninsula. Expect 'stirringly scenic' views of the Kohala sea-cliffs and the wild Pacific Ocean. You'll also see wind-tortured ironwoods and a rocky beach, offering a true sense of Kauhola Point's natural beauty.

What is the best time of year to cycle this route?

The best time to cycle this route is during dry periods. Given the road's tendency to become 'treacherously muddy' in wet weather, checking local weather forecasts and choosing a dry spell will significantly improve your experience and safety on the unpaved sections.

Are there any notable landmarks or points of interest along the loop?

Yes, a significant point of interest is the Kauhola Point Lighthouse Site. This area once housed a picturesque masonry lighthouse, replaced by a metal-pole beacon due to coastal erosion. The dramatic clifftop terrain and coastal views are particularly striking.

Does this route connect with other trails?

Yes, the route officially includes sections of the Old Kohala Mill Road (38% of the route) and Pratt Road (17% of the route). There are also plans to expand shoreline hiking in this region via a rail-to-trail path, which could impact future access or conditions.

Is the Kauhola Point via Old Kohala Mill Road Loop dog-friendly?

The research indicates that Kauhola Point is popular with locals for its natural beauty and cobbly beach. While specific dog rules for the cycling route aren't detailed, it's generally a good practice to keep dogs on a leash and ensure they are well-behaved, especially in preserved natural areas.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle this route?

No specific permits or entrance fees are mentioned for cycling this route. The area is preserved for public access, conservation, and cultural heritage by the local community, reflecting local preservation efforts.

What kind of bicycle is best suited for this route?

Given the description of Old Kohala Mill Road as a 'rough dirt track' that can become 'treacherously muddy,' a robust touring bicycle capable of handling rough, potentially muddy, and rutted unpaved surfaces is highly recommended. A standard road bike would likely struggle.

Are there places to eat or stay near the route?

The route is located near the towns of Kapa'au and Hawi in North Kohala. Both towns offer various cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options for cyclists looking to refuel or stay overnight before or after their ride.
