This route was planned by komoot.
The full loop is approximately 9.1 km (5.7 miles) and generally takes around 2 hours 40 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace, stops for photos, and whether you choose to explore the summit of Moel-y-Gest extensively.
While rated as moderate, the trail is generally accessible to most skill levels with good fitness. The ascent to Moel-y-Gest can be steep in places, but there are often multiple paths, including easier options, to reach the summit. It's a rewarding walk for those new to hiking looking for a bit of a challenge.
The loop typically starts from Porthmadog, offering various parking options within the town. You can often find parking near the High Street or the railway station, which is a convenient starting point for the route.
The terrain is quite varied, featuring a mix of well-defined paths, roads (asphalt, paved), footpaths, and dedicated hiking trails. You'll encounter surfaces ranging from asphalt and gravel to unpaved tracks and natural ground. Expect gradual ascents, some steep climbs, and undulating sections through woodlands and open ground. Appropriate footwear is recommended, especially after rain.
The route offers numerous scenic highlights. Key points include the panoramic 360-degree views from Moel-y-Gest Summit, encompassing Snowdonia, the Llŷn Peninsula, and the coastline. You'll also pass through the picturesque village of Borth-y-Gest, enjoy views of The Glaslyn Estuary, and potentially visit Pen-y-Banc Beach and Nature Reserve. The historic Porthmadog Harbour is also a notable feature.
Yes, the loop is generally dog-friendly. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially in areas with livestock, near roads, and within nature reserves like Parc-y-Borth, to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers and animals.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant conditions with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Summer provides longer daylight hours, while winter can be stunning but may require more careful planning due to potentially muddy or icy conditions on higher sections.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail within the Llŷn Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. However, standard parking fees may apply in Porthmadog.
Yes, sections of this route coincide with other established paths. You will find yourself on parts of the Llŷn Coastal Path, the Wales Coast Path (Meirionnydd), and even the EuroVelo 2 - Capitals Route - part United Kingdom 1, offering opportunities to extend your adventure.
The rocky top of Moel-y-Gest offers opportunities for 'easy scrambling' which many hikers enjoy. However, if you prefer to avoid these sections, the hill provides multiple paths with easier options to reach the summit, ensuring it's accessible to a wider range of abilities.
Yes, both Porthmadog and Borth-y-Gest offer a selection of cafes, pubs, and restaurants where you can refuel before or after your hike. Porthmadog High Street, in particular, has various options for refreshments and meals.
Walk starts in the main car park behind B&M. From there head straight to the "Port restaurant " for a full English breakfast and then your set for the walk!. This walk has it all, from mountains to sandy coastal paths. Just a great route and one that i would do again and again. Enjoy the walk!!
