Hiking

Embark on a challenging 7.0-mile (11.2 km) loop hike to Monte Legnone, the highest peak in the province of Lecco, starting from Rifugio Roccoli Lorla. This difficult route involves a significant 3748 feet (1142 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 7 hours and 23 minutes to complete. You will begin by winding through a dense larch forest, passing Alpe Agrogno, before the path becomes steeper and more exposed, featuring zigzags and thin ridges. Fixed ropes and steps aid your climb through rocky sections, leading you past Porta del Merli and Bivacco Silvestri before the final, technical push to the summit, where a spectacular 360-degree panorama awaits.

This demanding hike requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and alpine experience. The trail is not recommended if there is snow or ice, and strong northerly winds can add to the challenge. Bivacco Silvestri, located at 2146 meters, offers a potential resting point before you tackle the final ascent. The return journey typically follows the same route back to Rifugio Roccoli Lorla, so be prepared for a descent that mirrors your climb.

Monte Legnone stands out as the westernmost point of the Orobian Alps, recognizable by its distinctive pyramid shape. From its summit, you can enjoy extensive views across the Alps, from Monviso to Ortles, including prominent peaks like Disgrazia, the Val Masino, and the Mera Valley, with the magnificent expanse of Lake Como below. Keep an eye out for ibexes, which are sometimes spotted near the tree line. The broader region also features historical fortifications from the Cadorna Line of World War I, adding a layer of history to the natural beauty.

The Silvestri bivouac is located at 2,146 meters above sea level on the western slope of Monte Legnone. It replaces the old wooden building, called Cà de Legn, which was erected in 1894 by a group of pioneers of Milanese hiking.

The ascent to Monte Legnone is very long and steep in many places, slightly exposed and on rocks equipped with ropes and fixed steps.
The ascent in bad weather or with snow and ice is highly discouraged.
Pay attention!

Monte Legnone Summit

Highlight • Summit

A mountain top with great views of Lake Como. Despite its height, the summit is relatively easy to reach: there are only a few passages that are secured by wire ropes, so in my opinion even without climbing equipment well feasible. By the way, there are plenty of ibexes living here from the tree boundary, who can also see the path at a distance of 20 meters. Definitely worth the climb 😉

Panoramic excursion on Mount Legnone, which divides Valsassina from Valtellina. Medium-length climb with a difference in altitude of 1200 m starting from the Roccoli Loria Refuge. From the bivouac the path to the summit is equipped with chains in the fastest passages. At the summit, a breathtaking 360° view from the Rosa massif to the Ortles-Cevedale group, with the peaks …

The highest peak in the Lecco area in Valvarrone, Monte Legnone! Beautiful route, not at all difficult except for the last few km, where you have to pay a little attention to the technical ground equipped in the right places with chains, but absolutely doable. Water is always a mirage, so I recommend thinking carefully especially if you go there …

The highest mountain in the Lecco area. From the start at Ca 'de Legn you don't gain much altitude then the real fun begins!

Very nice, strenuous (mandatory) tour to the highest mountain (2609m) on Lake Como.

Beautiful and very challenging route even if for the first 3 km or so it climbs gently. There is no water on the route so I recommend bringing enough water considering that you are exposed to the sun. Route suitable for dogs up to "Ca de legn" then I advise against taking the dog further even if there are people …

Parking at the Roccoli refuge costs €5 for the whole day. The climb is steep but technically straightforward. Only a few sections are equipped with fixed ropes. The trail description recommends expert hikers with a mountaineering level of F, as some sections require the use of hands.
