Junction Creek Trail – Durango

Mountain biking

A tough day's program awaits you on the Junction Creek circuit with 56 kilometers and around 1,700 meters of altitude. But there is also good news: If you want to save yourself the first long climb on Junction Creek Road, you can also optionally book a shuttle with Hermosa Tours.

We start at the trailhead of the legendary Colorado Trail, which is located very close to the Junction Creek Campground. In the first 27 kilometers you climb around 1,200 meters in altitude before you reach the turning point of the tour. At this point the view of the San Juan Mountains is simply great, so that the strenuous start to the tour is quickly forgotten.

After enjoying this amazing panorama, turn onto the Colorado Trail, also known here as the Junction Creek Trail, and your downhill adventure can begin. The path is just a towel wide, peppered with all sorts of roots and leads through scenic terrain - a dream for single trail fans.

After about half of the descent there is another moderate uphill climb. Then you head back downhill over hill and dale to Gudy's Rest, a fantastic viewpoint. It's definitely worth stopping here again to enjoy the beautiful panoramic view. The big finale then follows and you roll through several serpentines back to the starting point of the tour.

Gudy's Rest

Highlight • Viewpoint

This scenic viewpoint is named for Gudy Gaskill, the so-called Mother of the Colorado Trail. So it is not surprising that it is located right on the famous long-distance trail that stretches from Durango to almost Denver. It’s said that this high spot was one of her favorite places, with stunning views over the San Juan Mountains.
