The full Polperro to Looe Coast Path, which is approximately 15.3 km (9.5 miles) as an out-and-back route, typically takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete. If you choose to hike one way, it's about 8 to 9.2 km (5 to 5.7 miles) and usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
The path is generally considered moderate. You'll encounter the characteristic 'ups and downs' of a coastal path, with some steep ascents and descents, including flights of steps. Parts can be narrow and stony, and may become boggy when wet. Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended due to rocky sections.
The trail offers stunning panoramic views. Highlights include West Looe Harbor and Hannafore Beach, views of Looe Island, and the beautiful Talland Bay. As you approach Polperro Harbour, you'll get picturesque glimpses of the village. Keep an eye out for wildflowers and opportunities for seal spotting.
Parking is available in both Polperro and Looe. In Looe, there are several car parks, including options near the town center and Hannafore. In Polperro, parking is typically located at the village entrance, as the village itself has restricted vehicle access. From Polperro's main car park, it's a short walk into the village and to the trailhead.
The trail is well-served by public transport, making it ideal for a one-way hike. Buses frequently run between Polperro and Looe. Looe is also accessible by train via a scenic branch line from Liskeard, connecting it to the wider rail network.
Yes, the Polperro to Looe Coast Path is generally dog-friendly. However, dogs should be kept on a lead, especially near livestock, cliffs, and in busier areas of the villages. Be mindful of narrow sections and steep steps that might be challenging for some dogs.
The best time to hike is typically from spring to autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally milder, wildflowers are abundant, and services in both villages are fully operational. Summer offers the warmest temperatures but can also be the busiest. Be prepared for potentially muddy sections after rain, regardless of the season.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Polperro to Looe Coast Path, as it is part of the public South West Coast Path. However, you will need to pay for parking if you arrive by car in either Polperro or Looe.
Yes, both Polperro and Looe offer a wide range of cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Additionally, Talland Bay, roughly halfway between the two villages, has amenities where you can stop for refreshments.
Yes, the route is a section of the longer South West Coast Path. Specifically, it covers parts of the 'South West Coast Path (Section 34: Polperro to Portwrinkle)' and 'South West Coast Path (Section 33: Par to Polperro)'. It also overlaps with the 'Polperro to Looe coast walk' and sections of the 'Lantic Bay' trail.
For a more relaxed experience, consider hiking one way and using public transport for your return. Many hikers prefer starting in Polperro and walking towards Looe, as the initial steep climb out of Polperro is followed by generally gentler gradients. This also allows you to finish in Looe, which has more extensive public transport links.
We used Millpool car park in Looe and the cream tea is from the Talland Bay Beach Cafe. Recommend both 🤙🏻
Today we went on the South West Coast Path again in the best weather. First by bus from Looe to Polperro, then through town and back along the coast. Good to run and beautiful. 😊
