Arènes de Besançon - Roman amphitheatre

Highlight • Other

The Arenas of Besançon are vestiges of a Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century in the town of Vesontio (originally Besançon, in the Doubs). They are originally comparable to the arenas of Arles or the arenas of Nîmes. Located in the district now called Battant district (arena sector), the amphitheater was outside the loop of Besançon (the ancient ancient city) because of its dimensions. The arenas could accommodate 18,000 to 20,000 spectators, and were 124 m long, 105 m wide and 21 m high.
One of the most important buildings in Besançon, in Roman times, only a few vestiges remain: a few bleachers and a few foundations, unearthed during excavations in 1996 and earlier. They served as a stone quarry during the Middle Ages. The Madeleine Church, the original Saint-Jacques Hospital of the 12th century, as well as the city's Vauban fortifications (including the Citadel of Besançon) were partly built with stones from the ancient arenas. The rue de Besançon which passes in front of the remains is called “rue d'Arènes” and the district bore the name for a time as “quartier des Arènes”.

Citadel of Besançon

Highlight • Castle

The Citadelle de Besançon is an impressive fortress located on Mont Saint-Étienne, high above the city of Besançon.
Construction of the Citadelle began in 1668 under the direction of the French military engineer Vauban, who is known for his fortifications. The fortress served as an important military stronghold and played a crucial role in the defense of France's eastern borders.
The Citadelle is a masterpiece of military architecture, with bastions, ramparts, underground tunnels and other defenses. Its design reflects Vauban's innovative approaches at the time.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Citadelle de Besançon is part of the "Fortifications of Vauban", which were recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. This group of fortifications spread across France bears witness to Vauban's military designs. Within the Citadelle are several museums and attractions, including the Museum of French Resistance and Deportation, the Comtois Museum which highlights regional history, and the Besançon Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in France.
The Citadelle offers breathtaking views of the city of Besançon and the surrounding valley. It is a popular tourist destination for its historical importance, architectural splendor, and panoramic views.
