We really liked Siena. In particular, the Piazza der Campo, the Domplatz and the Fortezza Medicea exude a special atmosphere. On the tour we had some magnificent views of the entire old town. Very impressive and fascinating. 🤩

Siena, for me one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany, known for its medieval brick buildings, the traditional Palio horse race and the filming of the James Bond film: Quantum of Solace from 2008! On the fan-shaped main square, the Piazza del Campo, we find some of the highlights, here are the Gothic town hall (Palazzo Pubblico) and the Torre del Mangia, from whose white crown, the narrow tower from the 14th century, there is a wide panoramic view. The cathedral of Siena, called Duomo, is beautiful on the outside and breathtaking on the inside. Certainly one of the most striking and beautiful cathedrals in the world. A visit inside is a must and costs money, but is affordable (8 euros for the interior and library). Other areas, such as the crypta, can also be visited for a fee, but we skipped them because there are simply too many sights in Siena and we were only there in the afternoon.

Pigeon hunting in Siena is still a popular reason to visit the city today. After a few days of peace and quiet, there was a lot of hustle and bustle... but Florence was probably even busier on another day.

Siena is the capital of the province of Siena and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany and Italy. It has always been in rivalry with Florence, politically, economically and artistically. While Florence, as a prime example of a Renaissance city, impresses above all with the sheer mass and size of its buildings and works of art, Siena has retained the medieval character of Italian Gothic architecture. The historic old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. The University of Siena, founded in 1240, is one of the oldest universities in Italy and is attended by around 16,000 students today. The Fortalezza di Medicea with a view of the city is worth a visit!
