Penmaenpool Toll Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Penmaenpool bridge is a grade 2 listed wooden toll bridge. It was built in 1879 to replace a ferry crossing. It's open between 08.30 & 18.30 Monday to Saturday. Sunday, 10:00 to 18:30. It costs 30p for cyclists &pedestrians. Outside of those hours the gate is closed to stop motor vehicles, but there is a smaller gate for cyclists & pedestrians that remains open 24hrs. So you can still get through anytime. But there is an honesty box for your 30p.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Mawddach Trail Loop?

The core Mawddach Trail, which forms a significant part of this loop, follows a disused railway line. This means it's largely flat with a smooth, compacted gravel surface, making it ideal for touring bicycles. However, to complete the full loop, you'll encounter sections that deviate from the main trail. These can include significant ascents and steep descents, with some segments being unpaved, rough, or unbound. Be prepared for varied conditions beyond the main, easy-going path.

How long does it typically take to cycle the Mawddach Trail Loop?

The full Mawddach Trail Loop, covering approximately 31.5 km (19.6 miles), typically takes around 2 hours to complete on a touring bicycle. This duration can vary based on your fitness level, the number of stops you make to enjoy the scenery, and whether you tackle the more challenging off-trail sections at a leisurely pace.

Is the Mawddach Trail Loop suitable for beginners or families?

The main Mawddach Trail itself is considered easy and is very suitable for beginners and families due to its flat gradient and smooth surface. However, the full 'loop' as described, which includes sections beyond the main trail, is rated as moderate. These extended parts can involve significant climbs and steep descents, requiring good fitness and more advanced riding skills. Families or beginners might prefer to stick to the out-and-back section of the main trail between Dolgellau and Barmouth.

Where can I park to access the Mawddach Trail Loop?

You can find parking in both Dolgellau and Barmouth, which are the main access points for the trail. Dolgellau is a common starting point for the loop. Look for designated car parks in these towns, many of which are conveniently located near the trailheads.

What are the best times of year to cycle this route?

The Mawddach Trail Loop is enjoyable throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with wildflowers in spring and golden hues in autumn. Summer is also popular, but can be busier. While possible in winter, be mindful of shorter daylight hours and potentially wetter, colder conditions, especially on less maintained sections of the loop.

What notable sights will I see along the Mawddach Trail Loop?

The route offers stunning views of the Mawddach Estuary and surrounding mountains like Cadair Idris. You'll cross the historic Penmaenpool Toll Bridge and the iconic Barmouth Bridge (Mawddach Railway Viaduct). The Mawddach Estuary Trail itself provides continuous scenic vistas, and you can visit Barmouth Beach at the turnaround point.

Are dogs allowed on the Mawddach Trail Loop?

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the Mawddach Trail. However, it's essential to keep them on a lead, especially when passing through areas with livestock or near other trail users. Always clean up after your dog to help keep the trail pleasant for everyone.

Does the Mawddach Trail Loop intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the Mawddach Trail forms part of several wider networks. It is a significant section of Lôn Las Cymru (National Cycle Network Route 8) and also overlaps with parts of the Wales Coast Path (Meirionnydd) and National Cycle Network National Route 82.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Mawddach Trail Loop?

No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle the Mawddach Trail Loop. The trail is freely accessible to the public. However, you may encounter small charges for parking in some car parks in Dolgellau or Barmouth.

What are the regulations for cycling in Eryri / Snowdonia National Park?

As the Mawddach Trail Loop is located within Eryri / Snowdonia National Park, it's important to follow the park's general guidelines. This includes sticking to designated paths, respecting wildlife and the natural environment, taking all litter home, and keeping dogs on leads. While there are no specific cycling permits for this trail, always be mindful of other trail users, including walkers and horse riders, and adhere to the Countryside Code.

Are there places to eat or drink along the route?

Yes, you'll find options for refreshments in both Dolgellau and Barmouth, which are at either end of the main trail section. There are also cafes and pubs in smaller villages like Penmaenpool, near the Penmaenpool Toll Bridge, offering convenient stops for a break or a meal during your ride.
