Hiking

The Enz is the longest left tributary of the Neckar and has its source in the Black Forest. As a result, rafting shaped the image of the river for centuries. On this hike, you will experience the Enz as it appears today near Bietigheim-Bissingen: with buildings from the Middle Ages and modern times, wine growing, fields and lots of nature.

You start where the small river Metter flows into the Enz, right next to the old town of Bietigheim. There is also a car park here. You follow the Metter upstream for a bit and then hike over the hill between the two rivers. From the panoramic trail, you first look at the town of Metterzimmern, then over vineyards, the Enz valley and the district of Bissingen.

After you have crossed the Enz, you will see the Altsachsenheim castle ruins behind you. On the river you will notice an old sawmill and a rafting canal, then you go uphill a little at the Schellenhof before you cross Bissingen. The former rafting path now leads you back along the river bank towards Bietigheim. You will pass under the impressive Enz viaduct, which was built in the middle of the 19th century for the first railway line towards Baden. At the end of your tour it is worth stopping off in the historic town centre of Bietigheim.

Japanese Garden Bietigheim

Highlight • Structure

The Japanese Garden commemorates the Bietigheim-born physician Dr. Erwin Bälz (1949-1913). He was the personal physician of the Japanese imperial family and a professor at the Imperial University for almost 30 years. Unfortunately, all access doors were locked today and the garden could only be viewed from the outside.

This was a nice tour today with many fellow hikers. The weather kept getting better and so, after a leisurely stop at Zum Schellenhof, we returned to Bietigheim under a bright blue sky.
