Historical Highlights and lookout posts, that sums up stage 6 of the Sallandpad well. Are you ready to discover it for yourself? Put on your shoes and hit the road for more than 15 miles!

The first 3 kilometers between Windesheim and Olst will be busy, because there is a lot to see on the outskirts of Windesheim. Starting at Buitenplaats Windesheim. The country house itself was bombed in WWII, but the buildings are still there and are definitely worth a look.

Once you've had enough and continue walking, the floodplains of the IJssel will soon come into view, through which you will stroll for miles today. A little later on the route you will come across several bird watching huts. Hide yourself, take out your binoculars and be quiet, and you might see very special species of flies, such as the kingfisher.

If you missed the kingfisher, with the IJssel river at your side for about 10 kilometers, you still have enough time to spot it. Did not succeed? Don't worry, you will quickly forget the disappointment when De Gelder comes into view in Wijhe Havezate. The moat around the manor is still intact, as are the coach house, bridge and entrance gate.

You walk a short distance through Wijhe and return to the floodplains, where you again pass an observation post. Catch your breath here for the last 6 kilometers of your tour or try to spot your favorite bird one more time before walking towards today's final destination.

You can reach the starting point of the route, Windesheim, by bus from Zwolle station. From your final destination Olst you can easily take the train back home. Spending the night in this village is of course even more fun! This way you get the most out of the walk and you can set off tomorrow for the last stage of the Sallandpad.

Birdwatching Hide De IJsvogel

Highlight • Mountain Hut

At the former brick factory near Windesheim, in the floodplains of the IJssel, you can find so-called tile holes and also swamps within the dike. There are two bird watching huts at the tile holes, namely De IJsvogel and De Ospred. As the name of the hut suggests, if you are lucky and patient at De IJsvogel you can indeed have a chance of seeing a kingfisher. Furthermore, you mainly see swans, all kinds of ducks and herons, including many white ones. At the end of summer and beginning of autumn, the osprey is sometimes seen here. We also spotted the white-tailed eagle once, very special!

De Gelder Estate

Highlight • Forest

Nothing remains of the castle, but the buildings that still stand are certainly worth a visit. The canal with the mounted cannons offers a nice picture.

Havezate De Gelder was mentioned in 1382 and demolished in 1913. A rhododendron nursery is located on the estate. The estate is open to visitors.

Villa Boslust is also located in the park and there is an ice cellar to the south of De Gelder.

Sixth stage of the Sallandpad, a tough one for us! Christel got wet feet first, and Danny got a cut on his big toe shortly after. Stage completed, but a rest day is scheduled for tomorrow, and the final stage is on Saturday.
