Salzburg: Krimmler Waterfall Way - National Park Hohe Tauern

This moderately difficult hike takes you to Europe's largest waterfalls with numerous viewpoints and pulpits. The Krimmler Ache is a typical glacier stream with a huge catchment area in which an average of 5.6 cubic meters of water falls down per second. This, together with the extraordinary drop height of a total of 380 meters and the location at the top of the valley, makes the Krimml Waterfalls a particularly impressive natural experience.

Starting from the Krimml tourist office, follow the road through the town towards WasserWelten. From here, path number 40 leads through an underpass and on to the Krimml Waterfalls ticket office. Before the viewing path becomes steeper, you can walk a short distance downhill, directly to the lowest waterfall level, Kürsingerplatz. Up to here the path is barrier-free. You can feel the power of the water and the spray of the waterfall up close. The spray also ensures the extraordinary diversity of 327 species of moss in the area of the waterfalls.

You hike back to the main path and continue up the viewing path, which leads in serpentines to the top waterfall and further into the Krimmler Achental. From some beautifully designed viewing platforms you can see the roaring masses of water falling into the depths. In the area of the Gasthof Schönangerl the path becomes a little flatter. There are a few options here to take a leisurely rest.

Between the middle and the top fall stage you briefly cross the road that leads into the Krimmler Achental. Now we go up over the top waterfall step. You always have an impressive view of the waterfall and on the “dusty friction” you can feel the drizzle up close.

The path continues uphill to the Schett Bridge and soon joins the road on which you now hike out of the valley. Shortly before the Annatunnel, the Alte Tauernweg branches off to the left. This historic path, which requires a lot of sure-footedness, now leads back to the starting point.
