Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Please be aware, that Makaleha Falls Trail is not a maintained trail and while hiking along Makaleha Stream, you will crisscross the river several times. This is certainly one of the more adventurous and more difficult hikes on Kauai as the trail often won't be obvious. Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the Makaleha Trail?

The Makaleha Trail is generally considered moderate to challenging and is not recommended for novice hikers. Its difficulty stems from being unmaintained and often poorly marked, requiring navigation by following the stream. You can expect significant rock hopping, scrambling, and bushwhacking through overgrown vegetation, along with numerous stream crossings that can be difficult, especially after rainfall. The trail is frequently slippery and muddy due to the area's climate.

Where can I park and access the trailhead for this route?

The Makaleha Trail is located within the Kealia Forest Reserve on Kauai. Specific parking details can be challenging as the trail is unmaintained. Access typically involves finding a suitable spot near the start of the trail, often off a less-traveled road. It's advisable to research recent hiker reports for the most current access points and parking conditions, as official facilities are limited.

Is the Makaleha Trail suitable for families with kids or beginner hikers?

No, the Makaleha Trail is not recommended for novice hikers or families with young children. Its unmaintained nature, slippery and muddy conditions, frequent river crossings, and potential for flash floods make it a challenging and potentially dangerous trek. It requires a good level of physical fitness, experience with rugged terrain, and strong navigational skills.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

While Kauai experiences rain year-round, the drier months from April to October are generally preferred for hiking the Makaleha Trail. During these months, there's a slightly lower chance of heavy rainfall, which can significantly impact trail conditions by making it muddier and increasing water levels in the stream crossings. Always check local weather forecasts immediately before your hike.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the Kealia Forest Reserve?

As of current information, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the Makaleha Trail within the Kealia Forest Reserve. However, regulations can change, so it's always a good idea to check with the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) for the most up-to-date information before your visit.

What kind of terrain and scenery can I expect on the route?

You'll traverse a diverse and rugged jungle terrain, characterized by steep inclines, rocky sections, and shaded areas through dense rainforests and bamboo forests. The trail largely follows the Makaleha Stream, requiring numerous river crossings. Expect slippery mud, mossy rocks, and a network of roots and vines, often needing to climb over and under fallen trees. The scenery is stunning, with vibrant tropical plant life, colorful ferns, and views of surrounding valleys, culminating in the impressive, tiered Makaleha Falls.

What should I bring for a hike on the Makaleha Trail?

Given the challenging conditions, you should bring sturdy, all-terrain shoes with excellent grip (some recommend felt-bottomed river shoes), moisture-wicking clothing, and sufficient water. A backpack with snacks, a first-aid kit, insect repellent, and a waterproof bag for electronics are also essential. Due to the unmaintained nature, a map, compass, or GPS device is highly recommended, and consider trekking poles for stability.

Is the Makaleha Trail dog-friendly?

Information regarding dogs on the Makaleha Trail is not explicitly stated as dog-friendly. Given the trail's challenging, unmaintained, and potentially dangerous conditions (slippery terrain, river crossings, flash flood risk, leptospirosis), it is generally not advisable to bring dogs on this particular hike for their safety and yours.

What makes this trail unique or a 'hidden gem'?

The Makaleha Trail is notable for its immersive journey into Kauai's untamed wilderness, offering an adventurous challenge rather than a manicured path. It leads to one of Kauai's most impressive and secluded tiered waterfalls, Makaleha Falls, which features a cold, refreshing swimming hole at its base. The raw natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and the sense of discovery make it a true jungle adventure for experienced hikers.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The primary highlight of this route is the journey through the lush, untamed jungle itself, which is part of the Makaleha Falls Trail. The ultimate destination and reward is the stunning, tiered Makaleha Falls, often described as a dreamy waterfall with a refreshing swimming hole at its base. Along the way, you'll experience diverse tropical flora, dense bamboo forests, and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Are there any specific safety warnings I should be aware of?

Yes, there are significant safety concerns. The trail is prone to flash floods, especially after heavy rains, which can make river crossings extremely dangerous. There's also a risk of leptospirosis bacteria in natural pools, so avoid swimming with open wounds. The terrain is often slippery and muddy, increasing the risk of falls. Incidents of hikers being stranded by rising waters and even fatalities from falling rocks have been reported. It is strongly advised not to hike alone and to check weather reports diligently before heading out.
