The Pyrenees range extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea for more than 400 kilometers. A natural border between France and Spain, it has 212 peaks exceeding 3,000 meters in altitude. The highest point, Aneto, reigns on the Spanish slope at 3,404 meters above sea level.
This beautiful loop offers a panorama of the king of the Pyrenees, from one of its most beautiful viewpoints: the port of Vénasque. Bordering, this impressive passage is reached from the Pique valley at the cost of an ascent as demanding as it is majestic. The route begins at the Hospice de France, accessible by car from Luchon.
The climb begins immediately upon exiting the refuge in a remarkable green setting. This section includes more than 1,000 meters of elevation gain. As you progress, the environment evolves. The green softness gives way to mineral terrain. The Vénasque refuge and lakes allow you to take a break before finalizing the ascent to the pass.
Nestled between two rock walls, the port of Vénasque is a narrow passage at an altitude of 2,444 meters. In front of you is Aneto, the highest point of the Pyrenees, while behind you the view overlooking the Pique valley is just as extraordinary.
You are now operating on Spanish territory. This part begins with a pleasant section which offers magnificent views of the Esera valley. This section is done on a gradual descent before going back up towards the Pas de l'Escalette where you find France. A long descent follows which follows the border before arriving at the Hospice de France.

Thanks to Philippe for organizing and navigating.
The objective was the Pic de Sauvegarde (2,736 m).
My shoes were soaked in the snow, which was difficult to traverse. I preferred to wait for the rest of the group at the port of Vénasque with another person because the ascent to the peak was …
