Saddle Ball Mountain

Highlight • Summit

Standing at 3,238 feet, Saddle Ball Mountain is the second highest peak in Massachusetts. Aside from Mount Greylock, which is the tallest mountain in the state, Saddle Ball is the highest in a series of four outcroppings along the southern ridge of the Mount Greylock Range that the Appalachian Trail runs over. In comparison to Greylock, this is a very quiet and peaceful summit in the woods, marked by a stone cairn.

Rockwell Pond

Highlight • Lake

The Rockwell, or Norman Rockwell, Pond is a small, serene pond located just below the summit of Mount Greylock. There is a historic shack on its banks, which only add to its charm, and is an amazing spot to capture some photographs and enjoy a some quiet away from the often-busy summit.

Visible from afar, the Veterans War Memorial Tower at the top of Mount Greylock was erected in 1934 in memory of all who served the U.S. during World War I. The tower measures 93 feet and was selected as one of the 100 Official World War I Centennial Memorials in 2018 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

Mount Greylock itself towers 3,489 feet above Massachusetts and is also the highest elevation in the state. The iconic Appalachian Trail leads up to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How challenging is the Jones Nose to Summit hike?

This hike is considered moderate overall, but be prepared for a strenuous start. The initial 1,000 feet of ascent on the Jones Nose Trail are particularly steep and rocky. After this challenging section, the trail can become smoother, though you'll still encounter typical rocky climbs. Good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended.

What are the main points of interest or viewpoints along the route?

The trail offers excellent scenic views of the Berkshires. You'll pass through an open meadow with expansive vistas right after the parking lot. Key highlights include Jones Nose itself, Saddle Ball Mountain, and the Veterans' War Memorial Tower at the summit of Mount Greylock. You'll also pass by Rockwell Pond.

Where can I park for this trail, and is the trailhead accessible year-round?

The trailhead is located off Rockwell Road. While Rockwell Road is typically closed to vehicles between late October and mid-May, the trailhead remains accessible on foot or by snowmobile during this period. During the open season, parking is available at the trailhead.

Does this trail connect to other well-known paths?

Yes, a significant portion of this route follows the famous Appalachian Trail (AT). After approximately 1.2 miles on the Jones Nose Trail, you'll join the AT, which you can then follow for another 3.6 miles to reach the summit of Mount Greylock. Other official trails along this route include the CCC Dynamite Trail, Overlook Trail, and Hopper Trail.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in Mount Greylock State Reservation?

Mount Greylock State Reservation does not typically require permits or charge entrance fees for hiking. However, it's always a good idea to check the official Mass.gov website for any updated regulations or advisories before your visit.

Is the Jones Nose to Summit trail dog-friendly?

Dogs are generally allowed on trails within Mount Greylock State Reservation, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please remember to pack out any waste.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

The trail can be hiked year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring and fall provide pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer is popular, but be prepared for warmer weather. Winter hiking is possible when Rockwell Road is closed, but requires appropriate gear for snow and ice conditions.

How long does it typically take to complete the Jones Nose to Summit hike?

This hike typically takes around 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete. This duration is for the full loop, covering a distance of approximately 12.3 kilometers (7.6 miles).

Is this hike suitable for families or beginners?

Due to its steep and rocky initial ascent, this hike is generally not recommended for beginners or very young children. It requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness. Families with older, experienced hikers might find it rewarding, but be aware of the strenuous sections.

What kind of natural scenery and environment can I expect?

Beyond the initial open meadow, you'll encounter diverse landscapes. As you gain elevation, the scenery transitions to 'gnarly trees and grasses' before entering a dense hemlock forest. This evergreen section often has a distinctive aromatic scent, like pine. The area also has a history of agricultural use, maintained as an open field to support wildlife and pollinators.

Are there other trails accessible from the same trailhead as Jones Nose?

Yes, from the same trailhead, you can also access other trails such as the Northrup Trail, Woodason Spring Trail, and Old Adams Road, offering additional hiking options within the reservation.
