Hiking
Start your hike from Rapallo along the ancient mule track, historically known as the "Strada della Madonna." This moderate trail covers 4.8 miles (7.8 km) and climbs 1849 feet (563 metres) over approximately 2 hours and 59 minutes. You will find a mix of paved sections, natural paths, and some asphalt as you ascend. The route features numerous zigzags, alternating between shaded forest paths with centuries-old holm oaks and open, sunny areas. As you gain elevation, you will see expansive views of Portofino, the Ligurian Sea, and the entire Gulf of Tigullio. The path leads you to the impressive Santuario di Montallegro.
This hike is considered moderate, requiring good fitness due to its consistent uphill climb. It is suitable for all skill levels and families with children, provided you are a little bit trained. There are no exposed sections on the main trail, making it a safe option. You will find convenient water points available at both the beginning and the end of the trail, which is especially useful during warmer months.
The destination, the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montallegro, is perched at an altitude of 612 meters (2,008 feet) and offers unparalleled panoramic views. The journey along the ancient mule track is a historical experience, passing by points of interest like an ancient "neviera." For those who prefer not to hike back down, the Sanctuary is also easily accessible via a monorail from Rapallo, which has been operating since 1934.
