Hiking
This moderate 5.5-mile (8.8 km) loop hike, taking around 3 hours and 36 minutes with 1766 feet (538 metres) of elevation gain, offers a diverse journey through the Corno alle Scale Regional Park. You'll start by passing through cool, dense beech forests, which gradually open up to alpine meadows and blueberry heaths as you ascend. The trail features varied terrain, including rocky sections near the summit of Corno alle Scale, the highest peak in the Bolognese Apennines. From here, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views that stretch as far as the Alps and the Tyrrhenian Sea on clear days. Along the way, you'll encounter picturesque glacial lakes like Laghetto di Cavone and the tranquil Lago Scaffaiolo. Some parts, such as the "Balzi dell'Ora," are exposed and require a steady foot.
While the trail is generally considered moderate, some sections can be more challenging, particularly the ascent to Corno alle Scale and exposed areas like the "Balzi dell'Ora." These parts require a steady foot and no fear of heights. During the summer months, chairlifts are available, which can shorten the ascent to the peak. This option makes some of the stunning views accessible to a wider range of fitness levels, allowing you to tailor your experience.
This route is notable for leading to Corno alle Scale, the highest peak in the Bolognese Apennines, offering unparalleled vistas. You will also reach Lago Scaffaiolo, a significant glacial lake, next to which stands the historic Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi. This refuge, dating back to 1878, is the first mountain refuge in the Apennines. The park's diverse ecosystems feature extensive natural woods at lower altitudes, transitioning to high-altitude meadows and blueberry heaths, providing a rich natural environment to explore.
