Jumièges Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The monastery's origins date back to 645. The Vikings burned it down in 841. Over time, however, it became one of the most influential monasteries in France. Until the French Revolution brought an end to this power and also to the monastery itself.
Mainly remains of the two impressive churches have been preserved. But the gatehouse, the new apartment and the bakery are also still in the extensive park.

This is a very pleasant easy hike mostly through gravel farm roads. Unfortunately the access along the river is not possible because it is all private property and they do not give right of way. Remember that Normandy's weather is very variable, so take some rain gear just in case.

From Jumièges you can walk along beautiful paths along the Seine and through fields and orchards. The ponds are not only used by anglers but also by hunters. Duck hunting is very popular in Normandy.
