Very rewarding journey. The Malga Mare car park is closed due to a landslide and therefore you have to leave your car at Malga Prabon.

Thanks to the beautiful sunny day, it was a fantastic hike. Wonderful places, definitely worth seeing. In the summer, they close access to the starting point, so you have to park a little further down the road, so you'll need to factor in some extra walking.

Parking is no longer allowed in Malga mare, the departure starts about half an hour's walk further down. On this tour you see the current departure. Nice ride where you can see Mount Vioz and Cevedale, nice black lake and Caraser lake. The passage on the dam is allowed until the end of September.

The place exudes Mountain and awe...like the pouring rain we watched from the windows (stuck pleasantly for a couple of hours at the retreat). The Larcher can …

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Rifugio Larcher and Careser Lakes Loop trail start, and is there parking available?

The trail typically starts from Malga Mare. Parking is usually available at Malga Mare, which serves as the primary trailhead for this loop.

How can I reach the trailhead using public transport?

While the primary access is often by car to Malga Mare, public transport options to Val di Peio and then connecting services or taxis to Malga Mare might be available, especially during peak season. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the Val di Peio area.

Is there a recommended direction to hike this loop?

Yes, many sources suggest hiking the loop in an anti-clockwise direction. This allows you to enjoy the best light for photography and often places your arrival at the Guido Larcher Hut at Cevedale around lunchtime, offering stunning panoramic views.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The terrain varies significantly. You'll start through wooded areas, transition to vast alpine meadows, and then encounter rockier sections with moraines and stony ground as you gain altitude. Expect constant slopes, some steep sections, and uneven footing. Even in summer, you might find snow patches, and streams are a common feature.

Is this trail suitable for beginners or families?

This loop is generally rated as difficult and requires a good level of physical fitness and endurance. It is not typically recommended for beginners or young children due to its length, significant elevation gain, and challenging, uneven terrain.

What kind of views and natural features can I expect to see?

You'll be treated to stunning high mountain views of the Cevedale mountain group, including glaciers and ice walls. Highlights include a series of alpine lakes like Lago Marmotta, Black Lake, and the prominent Lago del Careser with its impressive dam. You'll also pass the Salt dei Gembri Waterfall and enjoy panoramic vistas from the View of the Ortles–Cevedale Peaks from Pian Venezia.

When is the best time of year to hike the Careser Lakes Loop?

The trail is typically recommended for summer, generally from late June to early September, when snow has melted from the higher elevations and the weather is most stable. Outside of these months, conditions can be challenging due to snow and ice.

Are dogs allowed on the trail?

As this trail is located within Stelvio National Park, dogs are generally allowed but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Always check the latest park regulations before your visit.

Do I need any permits or is there an entrance fee for Stelvio National Park?

There are typically no specific permits required for hiking this trail, nor is there an entrance fee to access Stelvio National Park itself. However, it's always good practice to check for any updated regulations or restrictions, especially during peak seasons.

Are there facilities like huts or water sources along the route?

Yes, the Guido Larcher Hut at Cevedale is a key facility along the loop, offering food and shelter. Streams are also a constant feature throughout the valley, but it's always recommended to carry sufficient water or use a water filter for safety.

What wildlife might I encounter on the trail?

Given its location in Stelvio National Park, you have a good chance of spotting local alpine wildlife such as marmots and chamois. The area is also home to various bird species. Remember to observe from a distance and not disturb the animals.

Can I swim in the Careser Lakes?

While the Careser Lakes, particularly Lago del Careser, are stunning, their waters are glacial-fed and extremely cold. Swimming might be possible but is generally not recommended due to the low temperatures and the artificial nature of Lago del Careser, which is part of a hydroelectric system.
