Hiking
Embark on the RSPB Glenborrodale & Loch Sunart loop, an easy 1.7-mile (2.7 km) hike that takes about 49 minutes to complete. You'll gain 325 feet (99 metres) in elevation as you explore a diverse landscape. The trail begins with a steep ascent through Atlantic oak woodland, vibrant with mosses, lichens, and ferns, before opening up to heath and moorland. Enjoy excellent views over Loch Sunart and the surrounding heather and birch-clad hills. Be prepared for varied terrain, including some boggy sections and boardwalks, with parts of the descent through the oak woodland potentially being slippery.
This rugged hike includes several sets of steps and can be muddy, so stout footwear is highly recommended for your visit. While the trail is generally on well-defined paths, some sections can be tricky to negotiate, especially after rain. Consider joining one of the weekly guided wildlife walks organized by the RSPB to enhance your experience and learn more about the local ecosystem.
This reserve is the RSPB's most westerly site and protects a rare fragment of the UK's temperate rainforest, characterized by its unique Atlantic oak woodlands. The area boasts exceptional biodiversity, offering opportunities to spot raptors like golden eagles, woodland birds, and marine life such as otters and seals along Loch Sunart. Keep an eye out for elusive mammals like red squirrels and pine martens, making this a truly special place for nature observation.
