Hiking

The Scenic walk around Matera – loop tour offers a moderately challenging hike through the unique landscape surrounding Matera. You will traverse the deep Gravina ravine, rocky limestone cliffs, and elevated plateaus, providing diverse perspectives of the historic city. The trail, which is 6.9 miles (11.2 km) long with 1143 feet (348 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 3 hours and 24 minutes to complete. A highlight is crossing the wooden suspension bridge (Ponte Tibetano della Gravina) over the Gravina stream, offering a unique experience.

This loop tour is classified as moderate, so you should have good fitness and sure-footedness. The initial descent from parking areas can be steep and potentially slippery, especially if wet, making good shoes essential for your safety and comfort. The path includes sections of hiking trail, unpaved and paved stretches, and even some road and street sections, so be prepared for varied surfaces.

What makes this trail particularly notable is its combination of natural beauty and historical significance. You will see panoramic views of Matera's ancient Sassi districts from across the canyon, offering iconic photographic opportunities. The route also allows for close encounters with ancient cave dwellings and numerous rock-hewn churches, such as the Chiesa Rupestre Sant'Agnese, all within the protected Murgia Materana Park.

Scale model of Matera

Highlight • Monument

Here, a resident has taken the trouble to painstakingly reproduce the old town - true to detail. Really impressive!

The first building dates back to the 13th and early 14th centuries. The church was repeatedly rebuilt over the centuries. The inside is significantly larger than you would expect from the outside and is bursting with treasures (so keep it clean).

It's a phenomenon when you see these early Christian caves that people used to practice their faith as a church. The condition is remarkable 👍

Nice route, characterized by two crossings of the Gravina stream, one of which (the second) is a little difficult!

Very nice views over Matera. But the loop goes quite far North East without too much added value; it is also hard to follow as there are no markings. The canyon and belvedere are definitely worth it!

On the way back, you'll have to cross the river. If there's a lot of water, it might become impossible.

Following Komoot's suggestion. But be careful: towards the end of the hike you have to cross the stream in the gorge again, which I found difficult on dry feet.

To do, take water beforehand because it is impossible to refuel on the way.

The first part of the hike is what most people do. Because of the caves and the churches. The caves are not worth the effort in my opinion. They smell unfortunately (misappropriation as a toilet). The churches are not accessible (which is understandable). The second part of the tour is very quiet, but in my opinion more beautiful and worthwhile.

Note: A circular hike from the Kartodrom campsite is actually a good option (outward along the southeast side of the gorge and back along the northwest side, or vice versa). However, you must pay attention to the river level, as it needs to be crossed on the northwest-side path! On our hike, the river was too high, so we hiked …
