Hiking

Embark on the Monte Cocca from Lake Ledro loop hike, a moderate 5.7-mile (9.2 km) journey that takes about 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete. You will gain 2265 feet (690 metres) in elevation, traversing varied terrain including paved roads, dirt roads, and natural paths. While much of the route winds through dense forests, the summit of Monte Cocca rewards you with expansive 360-degree panoramic views of Lake Ledro and the surrounding valley, and on clear days, even parts of Lake Garda and the Dolomites.

Planning your visit requires good fitness and sure-footedness, as some sections can be steep, narrow, and include root paths or scree. The climb to the summit is possible without climbing equipment, but the final meters are very steep. Be aware that there are no refreshment points along the route, so bring enough water, especially during warmer months. While the path is generally well-marked, some descending sections towards Mezzolago might require careful navigation.

This loop hike is a favorite among local hikers and forms part of the longer Ledro Trek Medium route. Its main appeal is the spectacular viewpoint from Monte Cocca, offering unique photographic opportunities after your climb. In spring, you might find the path adorned with blooming flowers, adding to the natural beauty of the dense woodlands and alpine meadows you will encounter.

Highlight • Lake

The campsite is highly recommended and dog friendly. Places directly at the lake are almost always available. Starting point for hikes and bike tours.

The tour is very steep. We ran the loop from the Azzurro campsite on Lake Ledro. We had to overcome almost 800 meters of altitude! The tour runs largely in the forest without much view. The view at the summit is fantastic. 360 degree visibility. Great!! Did the tour in October with good weather. I would NOT run the north side in the rain or if it rained the day before! Otherwise it is very slippery and steep!!

Steep, Narrow Trail on Monte Cocca

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

If you go back around the bottom of the Monto Cooca, you go over narrow, steep paths directly along the mountain. Here you should be sure-footed, but then you can discover a spectacular path.

The tour was actually planned differently. Unfortunately, shortly after the descent at about 1300 m, we witnessed a hiking accident. We had a broken ankle (broken or ligamentous). After a difficult combination with 112, the mountain rescue team arrived in less than half an hour. That was fantastic. They did their job brilliantly and were super nice, too. We think …

This one is only for the sure-footed! We chose this hike bc we wanted to have a view of the lake. The hike around the Lake seemed to be a lot on the road. This hike had a maib view of the lake only from the top. It was strenuous and continuously steep. We saw a pair of fire salamanders …
Demanding tour, sure-footedness absolutely necessary.

This tour is inspired by out.ac/GBYrM. Please make sure to read the description and warnings. The return path is quite steep and more difficult then the way up. Bring hiking poles and wear good hiking boots.
